In a video released overnight by CD Projekt RED, quest director Paweł Sasko takes on a guided tour through Black Market, one of the key playspaces players will be taking their V to in the upcoming expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, and it looks crazy inviting.

The key takeaway from the above is how much more meaningful the peripheral life is going to be in the expansion, which has clearly addressed a few years of concern, feedback and suggestion from professionals and punters alike. Chief among those as well, as Sasko points out, in a complete overhaul of the police system in the game, making them and their actions more believable and much more dynamic.

In addition to the above you can catch an interview with Keanu Reeves who talks about Dogtown, which is the area proper that Phantom Liberty takes place in (Black Market is in Dogtown), and explains that where we're going is effectively a level below that of Night City, in the sense that it's shady AF.

Check it out below. Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty rocks PC and next-gen consoles this September 26. We'll have more on it as the date closes in so stay tuned.

The GeForce RTX 4060 is out this week, and NVIDIA let us check out the new mainstream GPU early to see what DLSS 3 brings to Cyberpunk 2077 and the still-gorgeous Night City with ray-tracing set to 'Ultra.' Benchmarking it against the previous-gen GeForce RTX 3060 and the GeForce RTX 2060 SUPER, the results are impressive.

This is great news for those looking to upgrade their PC or create a new budget build and plat the highly-anticipated Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty expansion later this year. DLSS 3 and Frame Generation is a game changer.

A snippet.

On PC, Cyberpunk 2077 has always impressed - as long as you had the hardware to take advantage of the impressive real-time ray-tracing effects in the game. From reflections to shadows to emissive lights, it’s still one of today's most visually remarkable (and demanding) PC games. At the time of its launch back in 2020, if you wanted to enjoy the ray-traced beauty of Night City, you needed a capable GeForce RTX GPU alongside the magic of NVIDIA’s AI-based DLSS Super Resolution technology.

What makes the RT in Cyberpunk 2077 still one of the most impressive showcases for what the technology can bring to games is the fact that on its highest settings, beyond what even the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can deliver, you’ve got a seamless and cinematic futuristic city to explore with no actual loading screens or transitional speed bumps to take you out of the action. You can go from a neon-lit nightclub out into a dark alleyway and then through some bustling rain-soaked streets in a matter of moments, and with ray tracing, it all takes on a filmic Blade Runner-like quality.

So much so that developer CD Projekt Red notes that all of the updates will we be released to owners of the base game as a separate patch if they choose not to revisit Night City and the new district of Dogtown in Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty. Described as a spy thriller, the latest trailer is impressive stuff.

Out September 26 for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, in addition to a new star-studded story featuring the return of Keanu Reeves and the arrival of Idris Elba, some of the changes and overhauls to base game sound incredible.

In Phantom Liberty, players once again take on the role of V, a cyberpunk for hire, as they embark on a mission to save the President of the New United States of America after her orbital shuttle is shot down over the deadliest district of Night City — Dogtown. What follows is a deep dive into an intricate story of espionage and political intrigue which connects the highest echelons of power with the brutal world of black-market mercenaries. The stakes are larger than life, but so is the reward — your very survival.

Speaking with VGC, creative director Pawel Sasko notes that no part of the game has been left untouched during the development of Phantom Liberty. The perk and skill trees have been completely rebuilt, vehicle combat has been added, enemy and NPC AI has been overhauled, there's an actual policing system in the game now, the difficulty has been rebalanced, and even the UI has been changed.

Night City itself will be more dynamic, with unrelated car chases happening, and factions will fight each other. Cyberpunk 2077 has received several substantial patches and updates since its 2020 debut, and the game is in a pretty great state right now. It sounds like Phantom Liberty will leave the game on a very high note.

NVIDIA and CD Projekt Red are finally ready to debut the new Ray-Tracing: Overdrive Mode for Cyberpunk 2077, and the results are stunning to say the least. The new mode introduces full ray-traced lighting for the already demanding game, replacing the existing lighting and RT effects with what's called path tracing.

For the more technical nerds out there that means ray-tracing for global illumination, direct and indirect lighting, shadows, ambient occlusion, and full-resolution ray-traced reflections. It's a remarkable feat that makes full use of technology like DLSS 3 and Frame Generation for the GeForce RTX 40 Series of GPUs. Plus NVIDIA has worked alongside CDPR to leverage all new pipelines and techniques that have been developed to improve performance and make RT at this level in games possible.

Check it out.

Full ray tracing accurately simulates light throughout an entire scene. It is used by visual effects artists to create film and TV graphics that are indistinguishable from reality, but until the arrival of GeForce RTX GPUs with RT Cores, and the AI-powered acceleration of NVIDIA DLSS, real-time video game full ray tracing was impossible because it's extremely GPU intensive.

Previous techniques separately addressed ray-traced shadows, reflections and global illumination for a small number of light sources. Full ray tracing models the properties of light from a virtually unlimited number of emissive sources, delivering physically correct shadows, reflections and global illumination on all objects.

The technology preview for Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode is a sneak peek into the future of full ray tracing, and we are working with CD PROJEKT RED on further full ray tracing enhancements, bug fixes, and performance optimizations.

NVIDIA and CDPR are calling Cyberpunk 2077's Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode a "technology preview" with the footage we're seeing above captured with a GeForce RTX 4090. Like with Portal with RTX, you'll probably need either an RTX 4080 or RTX 4090 for this to be playable at anything higher than 1080p. No wonder NVIDIA is calling it "a sneak peek into the future" of game visuals.

Cyberpunk 2077 is one of the most visually impressive, and intensive, PC games currently out there. Especially when it comes to real-time ray-tracing. When NVIDIA lifted the lid on the new GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 it showcased the new Ada generation's DLSS 3 tech and Frame Generation enabled in Night City. The results were pretty spectacular, and now the game has been updated with full DLSS 3 support.

As per the trailer below, the boost in performance is mind-blowing.

DLSS 3 is a combination of DLSS Super Resolution (what we know of as DLSS 2), NVIDIA Reflex, and Frame Generation. It's the latter that needs new dedicated AI hardware to run, which is why DLSS 3 is exclusive to the GeForce RTX 40 Series of GPUs. By using AI to generate entire frames it offers a dramatic boost to performance whilst still keeping latency within a playable range. So much so that it even improves latency over the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti in 4K using DLSS 2.

Here's a look at 1440p and 4K benchmarks - via NVIDIA.

“Playing Cyberpunk 2077 with the AI-powered performance of NVIDIA DLSS 3 is the best way to access the stunning visuals the game has to offer — this technology helps us take a new step toward combining unconstrained visual fidelity with exceptional performance," Jakub Knapik, Global Art Director, CD PROJEKT RED says.

This DLSS 3 update in Cyberpunk 2077 also brings improvements to DLSS 3 image quality and UI stability over previous versions we've seen in action, which is very cool. It also paves the way for Cyberpunk 2077's new RT Overdrive mode which will push the game's already insane ray-tracing to new levels.

In an interview with Polish outlet Parkiet, CD Projekt Red investor relations manager Marek Bugdoł said that the upcoming Phantom Liberty expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 will be the developer's biggest expansion to date. Budget-wise.

It's worth clarifying that this is in relation to scope and budget, and not confirmation that its size and content offering would surpass The Witcher 3's excellent Blood and Wine expansion.

But we can hope, as Phantom Liberty introduces a new area of Night City to explore and new story content including performances from Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves (returning as Johnny Silverhand).

No doubt creating Cyberpunk 2077's cinematic visuals and impressive character is a lot more involved than what it took to develop The Witcher 3's expansions, but as Phantom will be the only bit of major story DLC that Cyberpunk 2077 will get we're hoping its a meaty tale and adds a lot more to do out in Night City.

From new side quests to making use of the countless building out in the world, there's a lot of potential here - and considering the current great state of the game, here's hoping CDPR goes all out.

The first and last expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, the MGS-styled-in-name, Phantom Liberty, is already attracting some keen interest from fans, us included. And today during The Game Awards CD Projekt RED revealed that Stringer Bell himself, Idris Elba, had joined the cast for its next giant piece of content.

The teaser shown at the annual awards gala gives players an all new look at Night City’s Dogtown, where the expansion will be primarily set, as well as flashes of gameplay and brand new additions. The teaser also reveals new characters, chief among them Solomon Reed.

Played by actor Idris Elba (Luther, Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, The Suicide Squad), who’s joining the cast of Phantom Liberty alongside Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, Reed is a veteran New United States of America agent, and apparently the only person players can trust to help them fulfill an impossible mission of espionage and survival. Following the teaser’s climax, the actor appeared in a special video message directed at the audience and gamers worldwide, commenting on the character of Reed and his role in Phantom Liberty's story.

It seems like CD Projekt RED just never stops. All those new projects, the upcoming next-gen update for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, and a recent parade of updates for Cyberpunk 2077 making the game so much better than when it initially launched, alongside all of the Gwent. Plus Netflix things and oh-so-much more...

Now the studio has announced that when its expansion for Cyberpunk 2077, Phantom Liberty, is released in the early part of next year it will come packaged in a Game of the Year edition of Cyberpunk 2077.

"This is the natural order of things,” said CDPR boss, Adam Kiciński, during a recent presentation (thanks, VGC). “It was the same with The Witcher, which after both add-ons was finally released as a Game of the Year Edition and has been on the market in this way ever since. The same can be expected in this case.”

This spells a legitimate end to the series once released outside potential updates and quality of life additions overall, which makes sense given the series' purported sequel has shifted to development on Unreal 5. But we can't help but feel like at least another expansion should have come, to keep that so-called "natural order of things" in line with what the studio did with The Witcher 3.

No release date has been announced, but it's expected we'll be seeing this by at least Q2, 2023. Stay tuned for more as we have it.

Cyberpunk 2077 Patch 1.61 has dropped, and outside of bug fixes it might not seem as substantial as the recent Edgerunners update. But, digging into the patch notes we learn that the game now supports AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 2.1 on PC and next-gen consoles. Those being PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.

FSR is AMD's temporal upscaling tech that boosts performance whilst maintaining visual fidelity. Like NVIDIA DLSS, but not beholden to AI hardware. This means it can run on AMD-powered consoles like the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Adding FSR to console titles is relatively new, but it does pave the way for more games being able to maintain a steady 60 frames-per-second whilst still pushing higher graphics settings. Depending on the results no doubt it might just become a major part of games in the foreseeable future. And for a game like Cyberpunk 2077, it's being able to keep 60fps performance with ray-tracing enabled.

As for the rest of the patch notes, the one thing that stood out is the following nugget - "Night City NPCs will now carry umbrellas in various colors and shapes." Handy for those rain-soaked neon streets. Here are the full Patch 1.61 notes.

Alongside Phantom Liberty, which is the full story-driven expansion coming to Cyberpunk 2077 sometime next year, the studio has confirmed that it is working on a sequel. The game currently experiencing a surge in popularity thanks to the recent Edgerunners update and major patches and overhauls improving the experience, so this is great news.

The announcement came as part of a series of announcements focusing on the future of CD Projekt Red, which included confirmation of the next The Witcher trilogy, and more.

The Cyberpunk 2077 sequel has the working title Project Orion, and will "prove the full power and potential of the Cyberpunk universe". The word "prove" hints at a game that should hopefully launch in a far more promising state than the original. It'll be interesting to see if the sequel moves to the Unreal Engine, which CDPR has noted it will be using moving forward.

Additional documentation reveals that this will be developed by a new studio called CD PROJEKT RED North America.
A Cyberpunk release which will further develop the potential embodied by this universe. Project Orion will be developed by CD PROJEKT RED North America, which will comprise the newly created Boston hub along with our existing Vancouver team. Establishing a new studio - CD PROJEKT RED North America - will enable us to fully tap into the North American talent pool.

And the competition is open to anyone and everyone. NVIDIA and CD Projekt Red are teaming up to giveaway three awesome-looking custom GeForce RTX 4090 GPUs - which include the stylish Founders Edition and custom Cyberpunk 2077 backplates and support brackets from V1Tech.

Three are up for grabs, with CDPR making the entry process a fun one - forcing players to solve clues whilst using the photo mode. The first mystery to solve in order to be eligible comes with the following Tweet.

With CDPR noting, "Solve it and complete the task for a chance to get your hands on a GeForce RTX 4090 Founders Edition graphics card with Cyberpunk 2077 backplate — and make sure to have your Kiroshi set to Photo Mode, ready to use. You know, just in case."

Head here for the full competition page.

With the GeForce RTX 4090 being twice as fast as the beastly GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, Cyberpunk 2077 is set to take full advantage of this with a brand-new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode that will benefit from a 4X performance increase with DLSS 3.

Cyberpunk 2077’s neon-illuminated environments are key to its aesthetic, and with the new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode their level of detail is taken to the next level. NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI) gives each neon sign, street lamp, car headlight, LED billboard and TV accurate ray-traced lighting and shadows, bathing objects, walls, passing cars and pedestrians in accurate colored lighting. Ray-traced indirect lighting and reflections now bounce multiple times, compared to the previous solution’s single bounce. The result is even more accurate, realistic and immersive global illumination, reflections, and self-reflections. Ray-traced reflections are now rendered at full resolution, further improving their quality. Improved, more physically-based lighting removes the need for any other occlusion techniques.

After Cyberpunk 2077's rough launch, the player base for the highly anticipated open-world action RPG dropped off significantly as developer CD Projekt Red looked to fix and patch issues. Fast forward two years, and with the arrival of the excellent Netflix anime spin-off Edgerunners, Cyberpunk 2077 is getting a new lease on life.

With Steam concurrent players peaking at over 136,000 in the last 24-hours (as per Steamdb) which is a massive increase over the sub 20,000 peak player count the game has seen across the last few months. It's a number that tops the all-time peak player count for The Witcher 3, proving that the time is right for many to jump back into Cyberpunk 2007. Or, play it for the first time as the game is currently sitting on the top of charts on the Steam top seller list.

With several major patches, an expansion on the way, and new features added to the game the Cyberpunk 2077 of today is very different than the one from almost two years ago. And, yeah, it's great to see Night City getting new visitors. And hopefully this means CDPR will look at adding even more to the game in the near future.

Cyberpunk 2077 on PC is still one of the most visually impressive games ever released, where its ray-tracing effects not only deliver stunning fidelity but push even the most powerful hardware to its limits. As part of the GeForce RTX 4090 and RTX 4080 reveal, NVIDIA unveiled a new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode update that takes things to the next level.

Which is bolstered by DLSS 3, the next version of the AI rendering tech that will be exclusive to the new GeForce RTX 40 Series (on account of it using new hardware). DLSS 3 allows Overdrive Mode to introduce NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI), which "gives each neon sign, street lamp, car headlight, LED billboard and TV accurate ray-traced lighting and shadows, bathing objects, walls, passing cars and pedestrians in accurate colored lighting".

Check it out.

“Here at CD PROJEKT RED we are very proud to be technology innovators, and DLSS 3 gives us meaningful performance gains to tackle the addition of even higher levels of ray tracing to deliver a visually rich experience for our gamers,” Jakub Knapik, Art Director as CD PROJEKT RED said. In addition to the above all ray-traced indirect lighting and reflections bounce multiple times, compared to the previous version’s single bounce to deliver more accuracy. Ray-traced reflections will also render at full resolution, in addition to several other improvements coming.

The incredible part is that with DLSS 3 the game will do all of this at around 100 frames-per-second with the addition of NVIDIA Reflex to further reduce system latency.

Let There Be Flight is a new PC mod for Cyberpunk 2077 created by Jack Humbert and is available now over at Nexus Mods. And yeah, it's all about flying cars in Night City - and it looks so cool it should become a feature in the main game. Flying through the neon city of Cyberpunk 2077 is a nice reminder of just how awesome the locale is.

Check it out.

The mod includes new model details for cars, animation for take-off and landing, and some cool sound effects. The custom thruster stuff looks great, as does the glow of the lighting. And yeah, you can do a barrel roll.

Cyberpunk 2077 REDmod is a new bit of downloadable content for the PC version of the game (available here on Steam), and it will no doubt open the door to Cyberpunk 2077 mods in a big way. CD Project RED notes that it can be used to "modify and create your own experiences in Cyberpunk 2077" covering animation, sound, scripting, and more.

Very cool, and very Bethesda in terms of games like Skyrim and Fallout 4 supporting creators in making brand new RPG experiences and sometimes even completely new games.

Here's the official description.

Cyberpunk 2077 Modding Tools

Download REDmod — the official Cyberpunk 2077 Modding Tools — to modify and create your own experiences in Cyberpunk 2077. From custom sounds, animations, scripts, and much more, these tools will help you leave your own mark in the dark future world of Night City.

How REDmod works

REDmod allows users to create mods for Cyberpunk 2077. It can be used separately in the command line, or integrated through into the WolvenKit mod editor. We recommend using WolvenKit for the best experience and ease of use.

REDmod will be constantly updated alongside updates for Cyberpunk 2077 to ensure ongoing compatibility.

With official mod tools, a big new patch, and a new expansion, no doubt the future for Cyberpunk 2077 is looking as bright as the neon lights found in Night City.

CD Projekt RED has lifted the lid on the first major expansion coming to Cyberpunk 2077, and it's called Phantom Liberty and due for release sometime in 2023. As per the Patch 1.6 update, we know this will be limited to PC and current-gen platforms (Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5) -- alongside all other new content moving forward. We got our first look at the politically charged expansion in trailer form.

With all footage captured from the PC version, check it out.

I, V, do solemnly swear that I shall faithfully serve the New United States of America.

Get ready for Phantom Liberty — a spy-thriller expansion for Cyberpunk 2077 set in an all new district of Night City. Coming in 2023 to PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Stadia.

As per the brief description above Phantom Liberty is described as a spy-thriller and will expand on locations found across Night City - alongside bringing new elements to the game. As per the recent deep dive into the latest patch, we do know that CDPR is overhauling the police system (one of the most criticised elements of the base game) which should add some depth to the action. Also, it's cool to see Keanu Reeves return for the expansion as Johnny Silverhand.

The usually hot and regular Night City Wire streams from CD Projekt RED for Cyberpunk 2077 returns early tomorrow morning for Aussies (Wednesday 1 AM AEST). This "Edgerunners Special" will focus on the upcoming Netflix anime series, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, while also divulging new info on the game's forthcoming patch.

And while we're definitely excited for Edgerunners, it's actually information on the upcoming update we're most keen on. Plenty of time has passed since the fairly popular 1.5 patch came, leaving room for even more feedback from the community to tighten the experience up further. What that looks like is what we can't wait to find out.

In addition to stability and a few changes, though, this patch is also a first true stop on the way to the game's first major expansion next year, so there might be more than meets the eye embedded in it.
We’ll start with an about 23-minute long special episode of Night City Wire, with Paweł Burza joined by Bartosz Sztybor, one of the creators of Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, and Gabriel Amatangelo, Game Director of Cyberpunk 2077. We’ll talk all things Cyberpunk — Edgerunners, upcoming patch and what’s in store for the game in the future!

Right after Night City Wire we’ll switch to Amelia Kołat and Alicja Kozera for REDstreams #3, where together with Patrick Mills, our Franchise and Lore Designer, and Miles Tost, our Senior Level Designer, they’ll showcase a deep dive into selected features from the upcoming patch.

With the recent RoboCop: Rogue City announcement, a new game that looks like it might just live up to the iconic '80s sci-fi action film, we're definitely in officer Alex Murphy mode. Which brings us to this new mash-up from creator eli_handle_b․wav that takes footage from the first two RoboCop films and seamlessly blends that with Cyberpunk 2077.

This is pure awesome. Check it out.

The editing and composition are next-level and highlight the best of both worlds - including ol' RoboCop targeting some crotches. Really though it's the blend of Cyberpunk 2077's braindance stuff with RoboCop's humanity that sells it.

It's been a rough ride from launch to now for CD Projekt RED and its heavily-marketed and overly-hyped Cyberpunk 2077. The game had already tested the mettle of anxious players with a lengthy stint in development, only to launch a buggy and broken mess, which tarnished its many redeemable elements.

And while those elements were all overshadowed by anger, frustration and outright blame, is it time now to pick it back up and reshape our position, post next-gen update, and judge Cyberpunk 2077 as it stands now?

On this question we answer in the affirmative. And while there should be no shying away from what really was more than a bit of a mess of a launch, enough water has flown under that bridge now to start seeing the game in an all-new neon light.

Here's an excerpt from our very own exploration of that, and why we think it's now time to start celebrating the many triumphs CD Projekt RED accomplished within the game:
What is genius then, is the choices you’re given to make in the early throes of the game (and later, also). You can, for example, entirely inject yourself into that ‘corpo’ world if you want, and maintain a level of alignment there. Or not. The lines between the aforementioned are blurred based on your own levels of investment in its presented ideals. And throughout your journey your surmised position conflicts and conflates, as the game’s story beats ebb and flow. To a small degree Johnny is something of an example of the city’s disdain over corporations, yes, but really, deep down, Johnny is afraid of being forgotten and ignored; of not mattering. And this sentiment rears its head more often than not among the myriad denizens of Night City who struggle against its bombastic state, even while it bleeds in every other non-corporate controlled corner of itself (and sometimes there, too). He’s definitely an on-the-nose trope on the surface, and acts as a crutch for the story at times given the amount of distraction available. But if you take the time to dig deeper, you’ll find a lot of nuance and drive beyond his “fuck corporations” mantra.

Cyberpunk 2077’s strength lies in its layered world, through which you can dig and extrapolate and be informed, and become a decisive part of...
This is a lengthy deep-dive into the game's initial failure, a bit of history repeating, some of the critical opposition it faced, and why we think there's so much more here than what its reputation currently sits as.

So strap yourself in and discover just why it's time to start celebrating Cyberpunk 2077.

VG247 reports that a recent quarterly results conference by CD Projekt RED for Q1, 2022, has revealed that sales of Cyberpunk 2077 for the first quarter of the year are up a whopping 600% on the same period in 2021, likely driven by the release of the game's free next-gen 1.5 update.

Cyberpunk 2077 has, of course, suffered a heavily documented spluttery start to life as a key IP in CDPR's RPG stable. Something the developer is trying its hardest rectify with less grand-standing and simply more technical support of the game to ensure a smooth experience for all, regardless of platform.

This information couples itself with growth charts, however, that highlight the increase in sales as largely being for the next-gen machines in PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. This information also comes in the wake of other news items around the game and CDPR that include an early 2023 release window for Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion (of a planned two), and that the studio has signed an agreement to build the next The Witcher experience on Unreal Engine and not with its in-house REDEngine.

We recently explored the aspects of Cyberpunk 2077 if we feel were overshadowed by its tumultuous launch that really should now be being celebrated, writing:
... We faced an almost identical situation with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (though not nearly as knee-jerky or toxic), where parts of the launched game were incomplete or not as fully thought out as they needed to be, leaving it feeling rushed to a beholden finish line. After feedback and a handful of significant updates though, the game as it stood upon the release of Blood and Wine, its second and final expansion, The Witcher III was a glorious triumph, and is now lauded as one of the best open-world action RPGs of the modern era.

Maybe it’s time for us to start thinking of Cyberpunk 2077 in a similar way, post-1.5 patch and as we head towards its first gameplay expansion proper in 2023.
