On PC, Cyberpunk 2077 has always impressed - as long as you had the hardware to take advantage of the impressive real-time ray-tracing effects in the game. From reflections to shadows to emissive lights, it’s still one of today's most visually remarkable (and demanding) PC games. At the time of its launch back in 2020, if you wanted to enjoy the ray-traced beauty of Night City, you needed a capable GeForce RTX GPU alongside the magic of NVIDIA’s AI-based DLSS Super Resolution technology.
What makes the RT in Cyberpunk 2077 still one of the most impressive showcases for what the technology can bring to games is the fact that on its highest settings, beyond what even the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X can deliver, you’ve got a seamless and cinematic futuristic city to explore with no actual loading screens or transitional speed bumps to take you out of the action. You can go from a neon-lit nightclub out into a dark alleyway and then through some bustling rain-soaked streets in a matter of moments, and with ray tracing, it all takes on a filmic Blade Runner-like quality.
In Phantom Liberty, players once again take on the role of V, a cyberpunk for hire, as they embark on a mission to save the President of the New United States of America after her orbital shuttle is shot down over the deadliest district of Night City — Dogtown. What follows is a deep dive into an intricate story of espionage and political intrigue which connects the highest echelons of power with the brutal world of black-market mercenaries. The stakes are larger than life, but so is the reward — your very survival.
Full ray tracing accurately simulates light throughout an entire scene. It is used by visual effects artists to create film and TV graphics that are indistinguishable from reality, but until the arrival of GeForce RTX GPUs with RT Cores, and the AI-powered acceleration of NVIDIA DLSS, real-time video game full ray tracing was impossible because it's extremely GPU intensive.
Previous techniques separately addressed ray-traced shadows, reflections and global illumination for a small number of light sources. Full ray tracing models the properties of light from a virtually unlimited number of emissive sources, delivering physically correct shadows, reflections and global illumination on all objects.
The technology preview for Cyberpunk 2077’s Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode is a sneak peek into the future of full ray tracing, and we are working with CD PROJEKT RED on further full ray tracing enhancements, bug fixes, and performance optimizations.
The teaser shown at the annual awards gala gives players an all new look at Night City’s Dogtown, where the expansion will be primarily set, as well as flashes of gameplay and brand new additions. The teaser also reveals new characters, chief among them Solomon Reed.Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty is headed to PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X next year, with a proper release date set to be revealed soon, so stay tued.
Played by actor Idris Elba (Luther, Fast and Furious: Hobbs and Shaw, Sonic The Hedgehog 2, The Suicide Squad), who’s joining the cast of Phantom Liberty alongside Keanu Reeves as Johnny Silverhand, Reed is a veteran New United States of America agent, and apparently the only person players can trust to help them fulfill an impossible mission of espionage and survival. Following the teaser’s climax, the actor appeared in a special video message directed at the audience and gamers worldwide, commenting on the character of Reed and his role in Phantom Liberty's story.

Cyberpunk 2077’s neon-illuminated environments are key to its aesthetic, and with the new Ray Tracing: Overdrive Mode their level of detail is taken to the next level. NVIDIA RTX Direct Illumination (RTXDI) gives each neon sign, street lamp, car headlight, LED billboard and TV accurate ray-traced lighting and shadows, bathing objects, walls, passing cars and pedestrians in accurate colored lighting. Ray-traced indirect lighting and reflections now bounce multiple times, compared to the previous solution’s single bounce. The result is even more accurate, realistic and immersive global illumination, reflections, and self-reflections. Ray-traced reflections are now rendered at full resolution, further improving their quality. Improved, more physically-based lighting removes the need for any other occlusion techniques.

What is genius then, is the choices you’re given to make in the early throes of the game (and later, also). You can, for example, entirely inject yourself into that ‘corpo’ world if you want, and maintain a level of alignment there. Or not. The lines between the aforementioned are blurred based on your own levels of investment in its presented ideals. And throughout your journey your surmised position conflicts and conflates, as the game’s story beats ebb and flow. To a small degree Johnny is something of an example of the city’s disdain over corporations, yes, but really, deep down, Johnny is afraid of being forgotten and ignored; of not mattering. And this sentiment rears its head more often than not among the myriad denizens of Night City who struggle against its bombastic state, even while it bleeds in every other non-corporate controlled corner of itself (and sometimes there, too). He’s definitely an on-the-nose trope on the surface, and acts as a crutch for the story at times given the amount of distraction available. But if you take the time to dig deeper, you’ll find a lot of nuance and drive beyond his “fuck corporations” mantra. This is a lengthy deep-dive into the game's initial failure, a bit of history repeating, some of the critical opposition it faced, and why we think there's so much more here than what its reputation currently sits as.
Cyberpunk 2077’s strength lies in its layered world, through which you can dig and extrapolate and be informed, and become a decisive part of...
... We faced an almost identical situation with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (though not nearly as knee-jerky or toxic), where parts of the launched game were incomplete or not as fully thought out as they needed to be, leaving it feeling rushed to a beholden finish line. After feedback and a handful of significant updates though, the game as it stood upon the release of Blood and Wine, its second and final expansion, The Witcher III was a glorious triumph, and is now lauded as one of the best open-world action RPGs of the modern era.Click here to read it in full.
Maybe it’s time for us to start thinking of Cyberpunk 2077 in a similar way, post-1.5 patch and as we head towards its first gameplay expansion proper in 2023.
