VG247 reports that a recent quarterly results conference by
CD Projekt RED for Q1, 2022, has revealed that sales of
Cyberpunk 2077 for the first quarter of the year are up a whopping 600% on the same period in 2021, likely driven by the release of the game's free next-gen 1.5 update.
Cyberpunk 2077 has, of course, suffered a heavily documented spluttery start to life as a key IP in CDPR's RPG stable. Something the developer is trying its hardest rectify with less grand-standing and simply more technical support of the game to ensure a smooth experience for all, regardless of platform.
This information couples itself with growth charts, however, that highlight the increase in sales as largely being for the next-gen machines in
PlayStation 5 and
Xbox Series X|S. This information also comes in the wake of other news items around the game and CDPR that include an early 2023
release window for Cyberpunk 2077's first expansion (of a planned two), and that the studio has signed an agreement to
build the next The Witcher experience on Unreal Engine and not with its in-house REDEngine.
We recently explored the aspects of Cyberpunk 2077 if we feel were overshadowed by its tumultuous launch that really should now be being celebrated, writing:
... We faced an almost identical situation with The Witcher III: Wild Hunt (though not nearly as knee-jerky or toxic), where parts of the launched game were incomplete or not as fully thought out as they needed to be, leaving it feeling rushed to a beholden finish line. After feedback and a handful of significant updates though, the game as it stood upon the release of Blood and Wine, its second and final expansion, The Witcher III was a glorious triumph, and is now lauded as one of the best open-world action RPGs of the modern era.
Maybe it’s time for us to start thinking of Cyberpunk 2077 in a similar way, post-1.5 patch and as we head towards its first gameplay expansion proper in 2023.
