Of course the big caveat here is that
Xbox has always struggled to gain traction in Japan, but with global shortages it's still impressive to hear that the
Xbox Series X|S consoles have outsold the
Xbox One after one year or so of sales in the region.
It also brings lifetime sales of Xbox consoles in Japan to over 2.3 million -- over 20 years. So yeah, Xbox continues to struggle there.
In terms of figures Japanese publication Famitsu reports Xbox Series X|S sales are at 142,024 units compared to Xbox One sales at 114,831 units. The Xbox One was a definite disappointment in the region, the Xbox 360 managed over 1.6 million lifetime units thanks to a string of Japanese developed RPGs like
Blue Dragon and
Star Ocean.
The Xbox One generation also lacked focus during its early years globally, which no doubt factored into the sales. Again Xbox in Japan has never really taken off, but it's certainly looking like the Xbox Series X|S combo will fare a lot better than what we've seen in recent years. Especially with Xbox Game Pass and its growing library of great titles.
