Hey, want to feel slightly confused? Or perhaps, reach Enlightenment Stage X thanks to
Microsoft attempting to clear things up about the reveal of its next-gen console the
Xbox Series X? Well, glad you could make it.
First a quick recap. Last week, on Friday at The Game Awards, Head of Xbox Phil Spencer took the stage to lift the lid on its next generation console the
Xbox Series X. It did so with both the name reveal and a look at the minimal and sleek tower-like design of the hardware itself.
See? Quick.
Well, turns out that the Series X part is simply the model name - with the next-gen console to be referred to as Xbox. In a statement made to
Business Insider, a Microsoft representative said, "The name we’re carrying forward to the next generation is simply Xbox, and at The Game Awards you saw that name come to life through the Xbox Series X."
Okay, sure. And for those with Assassin's Creed-style Eagle Eye vision you'll discover that this is the reason 'Series X' was in a smaller font than Xbox. Which points to Microsoft leaving the door open for more models as time goes on. Perhaps the heavily rumoured less powerful edition will be called Xbox Series S. An even more powerful mid-generation refresh could become the Xbox Series XL. And a straight-up adults-only edition that accepts nude codes, will become the Xbox Series XXX.
Putting on our conspiracy theory hats for a moment - perhaps one of the key reasons Microsoft announced the Xbox Series X now is that when the full console reveal happens next year, there will be two models - the Series X and the Series S. And this simply helps with what could have been even more confusing.
Anyway, PlayStation 5. Simple.
