After being absent in Australia for some time now with no real word on when we'd be receiving the fabled device, Microsoft has finally got some good news: Australian Xbox One owners will finally be able to purchase the TV Tuner come this March.

The TV Tuner, which will supposedly retail for $39.95AUD (though you'll most likely be able to find it cheaper), attaches directly to the Xbox One through USB, and will provide access to digital TV. Not only that, but you'll also be able to share the many fabled free-to-air channels across your home network thanks to SmartGlass.

Controlling the TV on Xbox is done directly through the OneGuide app, which conveniently Microsoft has announced a "public preview" of today. Inconveniently it hasn't been made clear how users will be able to test the app considering the tuner isn't out until March.

Pre-orders for the TV Tuner can be found directly through the Xbox store, or through your electronic retailer starting today.

Spend $40 or just press the TV/AV button on my remote... Hmmmm...

Whats the point of this exactly.

For people with multiple TV's in their house, or like me where my current TV is situated too far from the aerial access point that it would cause problems trying to run a cable around. I also like the neat share through SmartGlass so that could also be a selling point.

You still need to plug your aerial into this though, so you'd still need to run a cable around.

If it let you turn the Xbox into a full on PVR and record stuff off the tv, I might have grabbed one, but this sounds pretty useless as it stands.

Oh is it not a PVR, just a tuner? Then yeh, whats the point...

wait, I thought that was the whole point of the xbone. wasn't it supposed to be the all in one device to end all devices to let you watch and record "the game" while you play mineshaft?

I don't think they know what it is supposed to be anymore. They marketed it as having unrivalled multiplayer but they sold it without the multiplayer design it is supposed to have. Meanwhile the PS4 is destroying them in sales in Australia.

Not interested. My TV does PIP and can stream to my tablets already. This is a feature for the plebs.

I use the HDMI passthrough / TV app with my bedroom setup.

TBox -> XBone -> TV

Even without the guide thing it works ok. Somehow the XBox controls the TBox with the xbox controller. I don't understand this voodoo so I just roll with it. No OneGuide but I'm hoping the update for this thing here will mean we get it.

It works well in this scenario because:

TV is like 10 years old and has no digital tuna.
TV is like 10 years old and only has one HDMI in, so the passthrough is nice.
I'm a bit of a lazy f***. Saying 'xbox open TV' is kinda nice instead of screaming at people to find the f*****g universal remote.
In the same vein, I go 'xbox turn off' at the end of the night and it puts it all into standby for me.

Yeah I'm using my TBox with my xbone, admitedly I turn on my TBox once in a blue moon then promptly turn it off after Rupert Murdoch has exhausted as much semen out of my balls as he possible can with out entirely destroying my soul.

My secret guilty pleasure is TODAY while I get ready for work. We don't even have a TV tuner in the lounge room.

For some reason my preferred TV source (Windows Media Centre PC) keeps dropping the tuners, even though the TV is picking up the signal fine, so I'm praying they incorporate some of the features they've abandoned from the X360 and Windows Media Centre into the Xbox One this year... i.e. DVR recording and playback, access to the video and music and picture collections on the Media PC, etc. As a media device, it's essentially useless compared to the Xbox 360 circa several years ago... Maybe they've been reserving all that for the Win10 release... Or maybe WMC is finally doomed and I'll have to abandon Microsoft altogether.
