While Microsoft are still adamant on keeping their upcoming Kinect 2.0 camera as a mandatory item for the Xbox One, those who are looking at grabbing the next-gen console will be happy to hear that you'll soon have the ability to bypass entering codes using the controller.

Microsoft’s Marc Whitten has confirmed through his Twitter (via VG247) that the Xbox One's Kinect will be able to read QR codes, responding to a Reddit joke which asked for the ability to do so in order to bypass manually entering game codes.

While it isn't promised that everyone will utilise this time-saving feature, hopefully developers will feel the pain that gamers have to go through when typing in each individual code on their controller just to get into a game.

Microsoft's Xbox One is expected to be released sometime in November of this year, at a price point of $599.

This might be the first good piece of news to come about relating to XBox One.

... wait a minute, what the hell? Console games require a serial number? What... the f***?!

I guess they use a serial # to bind the instance of the game to your Xbox Live profile online

Because a Live account and actually having the physical disc isn't sufficient?

A lot of console games have used serial numbers for years now, Last of Us has a serial number

Yeah I don't remember ever entering a serial number for an xbox game, I thought the only use for serial numbers in this day and age were for digital purchases through 3rd party retailers.

However this also strikes me as something they should be able to incorporate with mobile phones and the xbox app, it'd be far more convenient than having to walk up to your kinect camera.

Not if you're trying to control the second hand market, no!

Well, they might be - I'm assuming the data on the discs is identical between copies, which might not be the case... ?

Hrmm, maybe it wasn't Last of Us then, something I bought recently though required me to enter a serial key and I can't think of anything else I've bought recently *shrug*

Usually its just used to lock off the online or multiplayer parts of the game though, at least in the current generation.

Guys, stem the hysteria, they're just talking about entering redeem codes in general, and there are a bunch of circumstances on current consoles where you've had to enter such codes manually that weren't as nefarious as day one DLC or EA's online passes).

EG, if you buy an Xbox Live points card from a store, you have to enter the serial number on your console to redeem that. Ditto for an xbox live sub. Publishers often use digital redeem codes of games for giveaways etc.

QR scanning will just be a time-saving shortcut for that.
