Alongside the quite large news that Activision Blizzard has separated from Vivendi to become an independent company, the twin publisher has revealed new subscriber information for Blizzard's popular MMO World of Warcraft.

According to the press release that revealed the $8.2 billion deal to seperate from Vivendi, World of Warcraft now holds 7.7 million subscribers worldwide, down from its previous number of 8.3 million in March.
For the quarter, Activision Blizzard was the #1 independent publisher in North America and Europe combined, including accessory packs and figures, with the #1 and #2 best-selling titles year-to-date– Skylanders Giants and Call of Duty: Black Ops II. Additionally, Blizzard Entertainment’s World of Warcraft remained the world’s #1 subscription-based MMORPG, ending the quarter with approximately 7.7 million subscribers.
Earlier in March the financial report for the first quarter of 2013 revealed that World of Warcraft had once again reduced in subscriber numbers, down from its previous 9.1 million to 8.3 million. It should be noted that these numbers are worldwide, and do not distinguish between separate regions.

A conference call will be hosted sometime later today so stay tuned for further details on Activision Blizzard's latest financial reports.

I have to wonder how low wows pop would need to drop for most people to consided it dead. Of course having even 500k subs is far from dead, i wonder how many years it would take for it to drop to a level somewhere below 100k subs? Are people likely to be still playing it in 2020. What other games are out there tbat refuse to die?

I can think of another example, Modern Call of Duty. I would much rather another WW2 rehash CoD at this stage.

Everquest is still going strong and on its 20th expansion.

I predict WOW will outlive every MMO on the market today, with the possible exception of EVE.

Blizzard will use their existing WoW playerbase when they release their new MMO. Everyone currently subscribed to WoW at the time gets a 50% discount and an extra free month of the new MMO. Something that like, lure them in and boost numbers.
