While it may sound like doomsday for some, World of Warcraft's recent fall in subscriber numbers has still kept Blizzard's gigantic MMO afloat, with 6.8 million players still subscribed to the game as of June 30th.

Activision Blizzard announced the 800,000 subscriber drop in today's April-June quarter financial report, noting that the fall was attributed to the end of life of the current expansion, Mists of Pandaria. The drop was also noted as being in line with past expansion decreases, though the lack of content updates for nearly a whole year may also be contributing to the drop.

Despite the slip, Blizzard's MMO still remains on top with 6.8 million subscribers and an expected influx of 1.5 million Warlords of Draenor pre-orders. The release date for the expansion is expected to come alongside a cinematic announcement on August 15th.

In related Blizzard news, the April-June Activision Blizzard quarter report has also revealed that action RPG Diablo 3 has now sold a whopping 20 million since its launch in 2012. That number includes expansion and digital sales, putting it as the #1 PC game (in terms of dollars) for both North America and Europe.

Lowest sub numbers since 2006. That's what a 10 year old game, with sparse content updates will do. Still impressive numbers, compared to other titles...

Sounds like the inevitable drop when people are sick of current content and know when the next expansion is out.

I think half the reason people still play WoW is because 'everyone else does'. The drop in players will keep increasing speed.

Now you can buy a 90 for like $60 or some s***. That's gay. Why does it affect me though and why should I care? Because getting to 90 is so easy now (even if leveling) that you don't learn the toon at all during that time. Ok, maybe 80+ you get a few hours to get familiar, but the rest is a spam fest. The game will be inundated with (even more) raiding scrubs that are covered in Isle gear + vendor purchases but can't play the game properly. Scrubs leave because they can't raid, raiders leave because they get held back by scrubs. Guild leaders quit because they are sick of filtering through scrubs.

Sorry, but I used to play a ton of WoW, but it's certainly lost it's way and they are just getting what they can from the old girl before everyone realises the game is slowly cutting it's own head off with the alt/scrub friendly leveling system. It's also gay that I spend several months earning certain items then they patch it so it takes a third (or less) of that time to do the same thing. They do that about a month after I finish my grinds so what's the point grinding for something everyone will have just a month later?

So many reasons, surface hardly scratched.

Yeah, the current raid tier has been out for almost a year now, not suprised theres a slump while people wait for Warlords. I mean, I'm a total wow fanboy and even I'm not playing it atm. Every expansion starts off with them making a promise of getting content out quicker, and getting the next expansion out quicker and not leaving people on the last tier for over a year, and every time it still happens =\

In Warlords, the introductory bit when you first get to Draenor teaches you your class bit by bit if you're a fresh 90. Like the DK starting area where you do quests and get your talents/abilities as rewards, it does that. I made a mage and it only starts you off with a couple of basic abilities, then it teaches you more as you go. I get the impression the boost to 90 thing was only ever meant to be a Warlords feature, I guess they just introduced it earlier so people who hadn't got 90 yet could have a chance to see endgame MoP content before the expansion.

They do that about a month after I finish my grinds so what's the point grinding for something everyone will have just a month later?

Yeah, thats never really bothered me, I guess it depends on what your goal is though. If you're just doing it for epeen and want to be a unique and beautiful snowflake, then you're always going to end up disappointed. Should just do things because you want the challenge, or because the reward is cool. I got a netherdrake back in TBC, and I love my netherdrake. Doesn't really bother me that its now far easier to get than when I got it, doesn't make MY netherdrake any less awesome, and it doesn't in any way lessen my own personal experiences or challenges I faced when getting it. Same with killing bosses, killing Heroic Garrosh for example wouldn't be any less cool for me if I did it a few months into the tier, or now. How many other people have done it has no bearing on my own personal achievement, and the work I put into something. Thats where I get the satisfaction from. I just don't understand the people who get all upset when a boss is nerfed so other people can have a chance at killing it. That doesn't in any way lessen their achievement, its not like they're getting their progression stripped away, they still did the hard yards, killed the unnerfed version, that can't be taken away from them. Its just elitist bulls*** and ego that makes them not want anyone else to be able to do it.

I do it for the challenge. But that's the last thing left in the game that separates serious players (in my eye at least, nothing else in the game currently warrants this type of thinking, unless you include high achieves for old content) from the non-serious. This isn't about nerfing a boss, this is about a process of killing easy bosses (as in LFR) to get x amount of items per week, or x amount of valor per week, for x amount of weeks. It takes, as an example, 8 weeks to gain an item. Then a few weeks later it only takes 2 weeks to get the same item. I think that's cheap. The item isn't game changing, you can kill s*** without it, but it's at least something to separate the people who play hard, and the people who play soft. Something, anything. MMO's shouldn't be about hugging the clientel and giving them awesome loots. It's about earning the loot for yourself. You only have to look at the removal of the D3 AH/RMAH to see Blizzard is starting to recognise what the players want.

And think about it, D3 is even less competitive between players than WoW. If someone better than you joins, great, carry mode. You have no advantage over another player in regards to what drops. Everyone 'expects' to put in about the same amount of time to randomly get the gear they are after. There is no easy street, no pay to win, no gold to win, no way to get ahead past some very mundane practices (such as RiF, which will be dead in 2.1). This isn't about e-peen, this is about all round fairness. I'm certainly not the first to think this way, most of the people I used to play WoW with agree on the same sentiments.

I stopped caring a long time ago about wow. It was easily my favourite game. They destroyed it, to carebear and the community turned to s*** real fast. Although at least i have my life back, so i guess in the long run they saved me :D

I like when people say WoW isn't hard and then you ask to see their achievements for clearing heroic raids and they don't have them.

Anyway, I just play WoW for fun. I only gear up thru LFR and if I'm not doing that I'll be achievement hunting.

No tier gear in lfr anymore in warlords, you'll have to do some big boy raids!

Yeah, I saw that. Although I think I only have 2 pieces of tier from LFR and the rest is either timeless gear or warforged and I've gotten by.

8-)

With the new group finder they're adding, should be easier to get in pugs for normal difficulty raids anyway. Sounds like they're basically doing a built in version of oqueue.

I haven't used the LFR this expac as I barely played it, but I did use it in Cata it's the only way I can raid because I'm busy and only have random times I'm online.

I've played a truck load of PVP in MOP because of this I can sign in play a few BGs and leave if I have to without penalty.
