With the World of Tanks Core graphics engine, that debuted as part of Update 1.0, supporting real-time ray-traced shadows as part of a planned update. Players can check out the effect right now via a downloadable World of Tanks enCore RT demo. And the kicker is, Wargaming has developed a CPU solution so it won't require dedicated ray-tracing hardware.

Meaning this won't be specific to NVIDIA GeForce RTX tech, with all DirectX 11 cards able to render the ray-traced shadows. The tech will add ray-traced shadows to all live vehicles in World of Tanks that are lit by direct sunlight.

Here's a look.

“Ray tracing is a true revolution in video game graphics that is happening before our eyes—and we at Wargaming are among the revolutionaries,” says Bronislav Sviglo, World of Tanks Render Team Lead. “The development of Ray-Traced Shadows tech with the help of our partners from Intel is just the beginning. Take a look at the fruits of our labor today—download World of Tanks enCore RT!”

Again, as a CPU-driven implementation, it will be interesting to see if other engines or titles offer similar solutions for ray-tracing.
