Plus, like with the launch of Windows 10 there will be a free upgrade on offer when Windows 11 launches later this year. Microsoft unveiled its latest OS overnight where in addition to the smooth rounded edges for, err, windows and the middle-of-the-screen Start bar -- we also got word of a few game-specific updates coming.
Plus, confirmation that the Microsoft Store is getting an overhaul.
Xbox is now a part of Windows and is integrated into the new OS. As is Xbox Game Pass (including Cloud Gaming), a move that makes perfect sense as Microsoft continues to push the subscription service as a key part of its Xbox plans going forward.
Console features like Auto HDR are making the jump to PC from Xbox Series X and S too, alongside new DirectX tech designed to improve loading times. Yep, Windows 11 finally sees the arrival of DirectStorage which will leverage NVMe drive speed to drastically improve in-game load times. It's a feature supported by the latest GeForce RTX 30 series, with NVIDIA adding its own layer on top called RTX IO. It'll be interesting to see how it all works.
In very welcome news the Microsoft Store is being expanded to support all kinds of apps (including traditional Win32 stuff) which will be awesome for classic games and Game Pass moving forward. Android app support is also on the way, alongside a system whereby Microsoft is allowing devs to create their own payment systems where Microsoft doesn't take a cut.
