Nintendo has released its first quarter 2014 earnings results, along with information on both hardware and software units shipped worldwide. First off the bat is finances, which are looking good for any would-be investors. The report returns a positive net income and ordinary income at ¥8.62 billion ($88.1 million), however its the hardware side of things that starts to tell a more worrying story for Nintendo.
In 3DS news, the handheld console is continuing to show a strong performance worldwide, with hardware numbers at 1.4 million in the quarter ending June 30, 2013. Software sales are also at quite large high, with a number of titles passing the one million mark including the hit title Animal Crossing: New Leaf, which found sales of 1.54 million units worldwide and 3 million in japan.
Sadly though in Wii U news, it isn't looking as grand as their handheld. Hardware sales for the new consoles slumped to just 160,000 within the three month period, bringing the total Wii U sales to 3.61 million. This quarter saw total first-party software sales for the console only amount to 1.03 units for the Wii U. To rub salt into the wound the report also revealed that the Wii has sold 210,000 units compared to the nine-month old console.
For the "Wii U" system, we will attempt to concentrate on proactively releasing key first-party titles from the second half of this year through next year to regain momentum for the platform. Starting with Pikmin 3, which was released in Japan and Europe in July and will be released in United States in August, we plan on releasing key titles such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker HD, Wii Party U, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze, Super Mario 3D World and Wii Fit U. Moreover, Nintendo strives to improve the sales by communicating the compelling nature of our hardware and software to as many people as possible through our new network service called "Miiverse," which offers an environment where people can empathize with others and share their gaming experiences. We also strive to improve hardware profitability by reducing the costs.
Nintendo are holding steady on their forecasting, putting the company at ¥55 billion net income ($563.3 million) at the end of the current fiscal year. Sales predictions are also remaining unchanged, with the company targeting sales of 900,000 Wii U units and 1.8 million 3DS handhelds. Hopefully we can see the Wii U picking up its slack at some stage, but for now we'll have to wait and see what Nintendo has in store.

A console virtually identical to the last to the point where many consumers thought the WiiU was just another peripheral for the Wii
A price almost comparable to the PS4
Next to zero advertising
It's like it has been engineered to fail

The Wii-U remote likely has plenty of potential, no one has realized it though. Not even Nintendo.
