Originally classified by the Australian Classification Board in September of last year as an MA15+ rating, Ubisoft's open-world title has now received a new R18+ rating according to the board (via CVG).

After being given a new May release date, the board's recent reassessment of the title has seen more aggressive content warnings pop up alongside the R18+ rating. Previously, the content warnings pointed to 'Strong Impact' for violence and themes, whereas now the warnings indicate 'Strong Impact' for themes, drug use and sex. In the board's first ruling the game's drug use was flagged as only 'mild impact'.

The Sex content warning has also risen, graduating from its previous 'Moderate' warning to 'Strong', while the game now carries a 'High Impact' for violence. Luckily it seems no content has been cut due to the higher rating or reclassification, unlike our more recent R18+ rated games.

Watch Dogs is now scheduled for release on May 27th for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, Xbox One and Xbox 360. A Wii U version will follow at a later date.

Im curious to see when my generation (X I think) , gen Y and my kids generation (Z?), get jobs like this that pigeon hole stuff to protect the "general population", and how they will evaluate them having grown up in an era where games are pretty much in our lives daily, be it on desktops, consoles, tablets or phones. I havent seen Watch Dogs, but can it be any worse than an M15 rated TV Show/Movie? Even my 10 year old says to me, when hes trying to get me to let him play FPS's - which I wont, "Its just a game dad".

I suppose I could be assuming the rating panel is full of old coots, or religious extremists lol.

It is just a game and the notion that the interactive nature of them somehow has more impact has been disproved time and time again. That said, every time you deny your son based on the ratings, tell him to blame the old coots in parliament that can't understand such a concept - ignoring the problem and letting him play these games regardless would not do anything to actually solve the problem. Knowing who to target for complaints will be much more effective in the long term.

That, and a new generation of old coots who grew up with this stuff entering parliament.
