During a keynote speech at the New York Games for Change conference happening right now, Joystiq asked Valve's Gabe Newell about his thoughts on the recently unveiled Nintendo Wii U.

"Wii U seems to be a lot more powerful than the previous generation," he responded. "It sort of fits better into the scalability in terms of graphics performance and CPU performance, so I think it'll be a lot easier for us to fit it into our scalability model. We've always loved Nintendo."

While most of the world still scratches their head at Wii U, knowing there are progressive studios like Valve looking at it gives us hope we may see some cool stuff from it yet.

"Now it's a lot easier to look at Wii U and have it fit within [our] framework," he added.

Wii Steam?

Hopefully that means they can get Steam going on the Wii U. That'll just leave Microsoft out in the cold.

It'd be absolutely awesome to see Steam on all of the consoles in an actual useful capacity.

Yeah, definitely a hopeful candidate for Steam. Or maybe even those two can help do the online service.

I'm still not sold on Nintendo's new console. It's either going to end up being the most powerful system currently (with a horrid looking controller) or the least powerful of the next gen that everyone is crippling their games for.

Maybe I'm just a pessimist, but I'm not sure Nintendo is really invested in the serious gamers like they have made out.

I think you are being a tad pessimistic. Nintendo generally has shorter life-cycles for their systems compared to what Sony and Microsoft want out of the current generation. My guess is that the Wii U will be more powerful than the 360 and PS3 (not like a whole generation ahead, but significant enough to be noteworthy), then when Sony and Microsoft launch their next generation of consoles (most likely being very powerful), Nintendo's Wii U successor will only be a year or two away.

As long as the three big consoles from now on are pretty close in their capabilities, I'll be happy, as that means there's likely to be plenty of choice no matter what platform you go with (though I'm likely to just buy all of them).

They basically have a monopoly on the family market. I'm not sure what gives anyone the impression they'll ditch their core market and start cloning Xbox and Playstation. Sif you'd want to compete with them if you didn't have to.

I think the thing about the Wii U is that they can now compete in both markets. With a powerful console that has the same features as the Wii, they're not blocking off any avenues. As long as it's priced appropriately, I reckon they'll be laughing all the way to the bank.

They also have a huge install base - three fiddy or whatever for the console doesn't look too bad when all those expensive wii remotes and nunchucks still work with it.

At the time the wii U launches, chances are all modern games can be ported to it, and look fantastic. They'll look equal/better than the 360 and ps3 and they should be playable the same as those consoles for the hardcore types.

For the price point of 350 dollars, that's not bad and will tide a lot of people over for the 12-18 months I'd expect a new xbox or ps4 to be released in.

Do we know if Wii games will work on the Wii U, and if they will run in 720/1080?

It'll play Wii games but there's no solid info on whether it'll be upscaled. There plenty of articles that say no upscaling, but they all credit a source where the journalist asked whether Wii games will be able to take advantage of the WiiU's more powerful hardware. So you can thank an idiot for asking the wrong question.

Gah! Its not so hard to upscale is it?!

Pretty sure I read somewhere that Wii games will still be rendered at standard def. It's a shame, because some games like Donkey Kong Country Returns and Smash Bros. Brawl look fantastic at high-resolution (i.e. when played on an emulator).

If they did that I would be sold. The Dolphin Emulator makes games look A+. Yeah, listen up Nintendo. My purchase is on the line.

Midda, it's like I said. Pretty much every article quotes Giant Bomb as their source, and the Giant Bomb journalist only asked if Wii games will be able to take advantage of the WiiU's more powerful hardware. There's no solid answer yet.

Wii U looks sick, I heard that it can involve the 3DS somehow with interaction?

I'll be pretty surprised if it does render Wii games at a higher res. Pleasantly surprised, of course, but I don't see it happening. I reckon it'd have too much potential to break games, with some shaders and effects made to work solely at 480p.
