For budding designers out there playing with Epic's Unreal UDK, the team have just released a compilation video showing off the engine's 2011 feature-set, which includes examples pulled from a host of tech demos they've shown off of late, including GDC's tantalising Samaritan video.

The new feature-set includes (among many) enhancements to bloom lighting, foliage, high-quality shadowing, depth-of-field, as well as the inclusion of the DX11 MSAA Hair, Subsurface Scattering Apex Clothing and much, much more. We've mentioned that in the past, most of what Epic shows off in these demo reels ends up in games, so this is definitely something worth checking out, even if you're not dabbling in the kit for your own design purposes.

I've never liked the UDK engine, it's just felt way to advanced when there is much simpler engines out there that do the same thing. Though I would love to get into it, someday I guess.

Cool, now we only have to wait till 2015 to see them in a game.

So this isn't actually a game, but a package for people to create games in?

I chuckled a little bit when I realised the music is from the Facing Worlds map from the UT series... the Scaleform UI segment looks interesting...

Correct; it is a game engine that people/companies interested in using to make games (or other applications that require game-engine like technology - for example some companies might use it for simulations, training applications, etc) can simply pick up and use.

Looks like a pretty impressive set of features.

Looks nice. Would Epic be likely to apply these updated engine features to UT3 in a patch?

it's a pretty awesome IDE if you have a poke around in it. the issues I read with it out of GDC are that the games are too grimey looking which is I suppose due to the way the texture mapping is rendered with DX.

great for the licensing model which Epic have just raised to 50k on your first game before it's taxable. though i assume that would be some kind of domestic US law throw around

example games are Mortal Kombat, GOW series and I think also NS2 (?)

getcha grime on

It's not tax, it's royalties. You don't pay royalties to Epic for using the engine until revenue exceeds USD50,000. You also have to pay a USD99 license fee.

this is what Natural selection should have used and not some crap they are working with

@Mantorok, that is the only real incentive I've seen with using the Unreal Engine, other then that, I'm happy with Unity, as it has a $25,000 non-royalty limit.

royalty is just the monarchy of the revenue stream of gaming though, pretty much a tax :P

Too bad current consoles are holding back game tech.... until there are NEW consoles released we will be stuck in DX9 and graphics from 2006.
