Described as an open-world adventure based on Greek mythology, Ubisoft's Gods & Monsters puts players in the role of Fenyx in a tale about saving the gods from the monster Typhon. From the team behind the excellent Assassin's Creed Odyssey, the vibrant visuals make it sounds like it has all the grand adventure stuff from the series minus the real-world history.
In a new official post, Creative Director Jonathan Dumont, provides some more details on what to expect. Including word that the game will feature a narrator in the form of Homer telling his grandchildren the story of Fenyx. This approach will lead to a more "lighthearted" tone for the game, but still one where players can choose where to go and what gear and equipment to take with them.
In addition to a look and feel that is reminiscent of The Legend of Zelda, some of the new mechanics definitely sound like they've taken their cue from Nintendo's classic. One of the magical items in Gods & Monsters will be the Boots of Hermes - giving players a double-jump ability allowing them to reach new areas. "It's really about losing yourself in this world that offers a variety of gameplay through combat, puzzles, and traversal," said Jonathan Dumont.
Adding that this departure from the historical setting of Assassin's Creed has opened the door to a new style of game for the team, "Building an Assassin's Creed game limits what you can tap into. During production, we started thinking, 'what if we made something that's 100% mythology? We could make a dramatically different game than we did before.' Gods & Monsters really is a brand new type of game for us that is a complete mythological adventure built on the four-year background we have of building a historical Greek setting."
Going 100% mythology is very cool, and we can't wait to see the many myths, monsters, and legends brought to life. Gods & Monsters is set to launch on February 25, 2020.
