Well, looks like that
EA exclusivity deal is over -- or this new game will be out the moment it expires in 2023. This week we not only got word that
Lucasfilm Games was back, but that the Disney division has inked a deal with
Bethesda to develop a brand-new game set in the
Indiana Jones universe. Overnight (thanks
to WIRED) we’ve got word of a new open-world
Star Wars game in the works at
Ubisoft.
The game is being developed by Ubisoft’s Massive Entertainment, the studio behind The Division series and an apparently still-in-the-works game based on James Cameron’s Avatar. Like The Division and the interactive Avatar game this new open-world title will make use of Massive’s Snowdrop engine and the project is being led by Julian Gerighty, the director of The Division 2 and The Crew.
According to the report the project is still early so odds are we won’t see it until the EA and Disney deal surrounding Star Wars videogames expires. On that note with the announcement of an Ubi Star Wars, it looks like Disney has already... altered the deal.
“EA has been and will continue to be a very strategic and important partner for us now and going forward,” Sean Shoptaw, a senior vice president at Disney told WIRED. But, in the case of the 10-year deal it didn’t respond directly, simply adding that there’s more than enough room for other developers to take a crack at a game set a long time ago in a galaxy far, far, away.
“The vast Star Wars lore is an incredible source of inspiration for our teams,” adds Yves Guillemot, co-founder and CEO of Ubisoft. “This is the beginning of a long-term collaboration with Disney and Lucasfilm Games, and we are pleased to be working hand-in-hand to build upon the incredible legacy of Lucasfilm to create a game that we know Star Wars fans will love.”
Lucasfilm Games will work closely with Ubisoft and leverage the company’s expertise in the open-world field, but it will have the final say over the decisions being made -- whilst noting that upcoming Star Wars games will be cannon and fit in with the current plans and timelines surrounding the Star Wars universe across movies, tv, and comics.
