Because apparently there are now four sequels in the works, simultaneously, to the 2009 hit film. And by hit we mean, broke all box office records but somehow has since been forgotten by most people. Anyway so Massive, the Ubisoft studio behind The Division, is working on a game that will take players to Pandora. Which is the lush green planet seen in Avatar. We think. No word yet on what sort of game it will be outside of sharing thematic elements with the movies, but the safe money is on some sort of open world experience.
Here's the announcement trailer which also notes that this project is in collaboration with James Cameron's Lightstorm Entertainment and Fox Interactive.
"James Cameron and Lightstorm Entertainment changed the way we think about immersive storytelling with the first Avatar, and the ambition that they have for the forthcoming films and this game is really inspiring," said David Polfeldt, Managing Director, Massive. "It’s a privilege to work with them and we’re honoured that they’ve entrusted us to create an experience worthy of the Avatar name."
"What impressed me about Massive were the group’s passion for this project and the power of its Snowdrop engine," said Cameron. "I believe Ubisoft’s team at Massive Entertainment are absolutely the right partners to bring the beauty and danger of Pandora to life."
Which is all well and good, and Pandora would make a fantastic location for a video game, but can anyone name two characters from Avatar? Or, remember the last time they saw an Avatar-branded piece of pop culture?
