As per a new financial report
Ubisoft's revenue for the 2019-2020 fiscal year will see "a sharp downward revision in the revenues expected from
Ghost Recon Breakpoint and, to a lesser extent,
The Division 2". With Breakpoint singled out as not living up to its AAA promise.
Although we haven't posted our full review of Ghost Recon Breakpoint yet, which is mostly due to just how vastly bland the game is, our sentiments mostly mirror the tepid critical response the game has garnered so far. It's simply not good enough or polished enough to warrant it's size and scope.
Yeah it's rough, even compared to the middling but highly successful co-op romp that was Ghost Recon Wildlands at launch. Compared to Breakpoint, Wildlands is the far better game. As for the how and why, Yves Guillemot, Co-Founder and Chief Executive Officer at Ubisoft outlines the problems with Ghost Recon Breakpoint.
It's mostly corporate speak (which is to be expected as part of a financial review), but does admit to the game failing in many key areas.
We have not capitalized on the potential of our latest two AAA releases. For Ghost Recon Breakpoint, while the game’s quality appeared on track – based on E3, Gamescom, previews and our latest internal playtests –, critical reception and sales during the game’s first weeks were very disappointing. As we have done with past titles, we will continue to support the game and listen to the community in order to deliver the necessary improvements.
At this stage, we have identified three main reasons behind this underperformance:
- First, it is harder to generate interest for a sequel to a Live multiplayer game, when prior iterations benefited from years of optimization. Consequently, we need to make sure there is more time between each iteration of Live games.
- Second, our strategy of introducing gameplay innovations in our games has had a very positive impact on our brands. However, to win over players, these innovations need to be perfectly implemented in order to offer an optimal experience. This has not yet been sufficiently the case with Ghost Recon Breakpoint. While the change of formula has been very well received by some players, with an average daily playtime per player of over three hours, it also has been strongly rejected by a significant portion of the community.
- Finally, Ghost Recon Breakpoint did not come in with enough differentiation factors, which prevented the game’s intrinsic qualities from standing out.
From that we can glean that one of the issues is franchise fatigue, and this makes perfect sense. If a game received post-launch support for months or years then the arrival of a sequel naturally feels a lot less exciting than it should. A lesson Ubisoft learned in the past with the Assassin's Creed series.
Second, Ubisoft basically admits that the RPG gear score elements and approach in Ghost Recon Breakpoint is half-baked. The good news is that Ubisoft plan to continue supporting the game and implement changes based on community feedback.
