Developer Creative Assembly's long-awaited return to the historical side of Total War after a pair of Warhammer-themed fantasy releases (which we adored) sees the action shift to the romantic setting of 2nd century China. Well, aesthetically that is, as Total War: Three Kingdoms is still very much about war, strategic alliances, and decimating your enemies.

Three Kingdoms offers players the choice to play through a campaign either with a fictional Romance of the Three Kingdoms bent - with added one-on-one duels between generals and leaders - or a more historical Records mode for Total War purists.

Total War: Three Kingdoms also features a completely reworked interface, UI, and enhanced diplomacy that plays into the era depicted. As well as the latest version of the still-impressive battle engine. We've been playing it pretty steadily this past week and the end result is impressive, so stay tuned for our full review.
