"It's fast-paced firefights meets punk rock mosh pit"... or so goes the reveal trailer for Tom Clancy’s XDefiant, a new free-to-play, fast-paced arena shooter that blends characters and styles from a number of Ubisoft Tom Clancy joints. Like the Cleaners from The Division and the Wolves from Ghost Recon, albeit in arena 6v6 shooter hero-style form.
Check it out. Though we're not sure how the drum n bass music fits in with the "punk rock mosh pit" descriptor. Jus' sayin'.
Personalized Playstyle
Personalize your Defiant to match your playstyle. Choose your faction, traits, abilities, and ultras. Select from an arsenal of primary and secondary weapons, attachments, and a device to complete your loadout – then tweak it on the fly to adapt to an ever-changing battlefield.
Competitive Clashes
Tom Clancy’s XDefiant offers a variety of competitive 6v6 arena and linear game modes, such as Domination and Escort. Combine that with a large pool of uniquely designed maps in rotation and no two matches will feel the same.
Diverse Factions of Defiants
Wolves, Outcasts, Cleaners, and Echelon factions battling across iconic locations is just the starting point. We’ll keep adding to our cast of Defiants as the game evolves, drawing on a range of characters and abilities from the Clancy universe and beyond.
As for its arena action, it looks and sounds a lot like Overwatch and Valorant with a dash of Call of Duty set in the Clancy-verse. Which kind of makes the reveal not all that exciting in a "been there, done that" sort of way. Not that it's a mark of quality but the reveal trailer currently has a 50/50 split in terms of thumbs up and thumbs down on YouTube.
Players will be able to jump into the action soon (though this will be limited to the US and Canada) with a Closed Test kicking off on August 5 -- so be sure to register your interest here. Tom Clancy's XDefiant is currently in development for PC, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X and S, and PlayStation 5 - with the team looking to get players in early and shape the overall outcome based on feedback. The game is currently in development over at Ubisoft San Francisco with FPS veteran Mark Rubin (Executive Producer) and Ubisoft veteran Jason Schroeder (Creative Director) at the helm.
Throwing our own two cents into the mix, the title 'XDefiant' mixed with the neon graffiti aesthetic feels a little forced. More Sk8R B0i than an actual chaotic mosh pit. Also, the Sam Fisher cosplay in the official art has us wanting a new Splinter Cell proper even more.
