After launching in early April under the rebranded Ghost Recon Phantoms name, Ubisoft's free-to-play third-person shooter has now officially launched local Australian servers to help offer a more local edge.

Corey Facteau, producer on Ghost Recon Phantoms said “We are thrilled with the number of active players which just passed the one million mark. We are seeing a lot of new players from newly opened territories including Australia and Brazil as well as countries where the game had been available during open beta.”

In Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms players are able to compete in a number of different game modes, alongside a large arsenal of weaponry and gadgets to help complete the job. Players will step into the boots of an elite Ghost and deploy cutting-edge weapons and technology as you link up with your squad to dominate your enemies on tomorrow’s battlefield. Facteu also stated that “We [Ubisoft] are going to continue improving Ghost Recon Phantoms by releasing regular new content in game, and we are looking forward to seeing what suggestions these new territories have and how it will help us shape the future of the game.”

Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Phantoms is available as a free-to-play title through Steam for Windows PC only.

I played it ages ago while still beta, alpha early access or w/e it is these days. Not a bad squad based cover shooter, but kinda pay to win.

Aussie servers makes me somewhat willing to try it again. After all you are only as good as your ping. Or in this case how much coin you put into it.

I played it recently, it was ok. Nothing too outstanding about it except that it is F2P.

I played Recon and once I upgraded from the starter rifle my KDR was very high. Due to the cover mechanics I can easily poke out, and with increased zoom, hit them in exposed areas. Or, when they pop up to shoot/suppress, I peek out and easily get a headshot.

Some of the maps are absolutely terrible. You want to quit because they are so imbalanced & terrible. Other maps are fun to sneak around the sides and catch people unaware.

In my experience it's a waste of time putting up servers after launch - except in very rare cases, it's already too late. Users who bought the game try to play it online, have a crappy experience, and forget about it.

You have one chance to make an impression, and it's at launch. If you're not going to bother having local servers at launch then don't bother at all.

I tried it again, keep getting matched with over seas players. Either I'm doing something wrong (you hit one button to play) or this aussie server thing is BS. They also do server maintenance in AU prime time.
