EA and Respawn Entertainment's mech shooter Titanfall has topped sales in the April 2014 NPD, however Sony's PlayStation 4 is still topping hardware charts despite the rather large software sales going to Microsoft's Xbox One.

Following its launch in March, Respawn's Titanfall is once again topping the April charts for Xbox One, but software sales in the US retail declined roughly 10 percent to $227.9 million for the month, according to the NPD (via GamesIndustry). It isn't all bad news though, with total industry sales climbing 17 percent to $580.3 million, thanks in part to the next-gen hardware movement. Hardware sales for the April NPD moved 76 percent to $192.8 million, with accessories gaining a 21 percent increase to $159.7 million.

While Titanfall's sales have topped the NPD and definitely helped push Xbox One sales, NPD results for April show that Sony's PlayStation 4 is still topping charts for the fourth month in a row. "Life to date, sales of PS4 and Xbox One hardware have more than doubled the combined sales of PS3 and 360 hardware through their first six months of sales,” said NPD analyst Liam Callahan.

"PS4 software combined with Xbox One software sales are up over 40 percent compared to sales of the PS3 and Xbox 360 through their first six months. Wii U software sales were up over last year by over 80 percent," he continued.
