Although acclaimed by some and enjoyed by a small group of dedicated fans, 2012 open-world RPG Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning failed to find a large audience to match its huge development budget. Even though it boasted some serious behind-the-scenes talent ranging from Todd McFarlane to Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion lead designer Ken Rolston.
And so in another acquisition, following from the recent new that Timesplitters was coming back, THQ Nordic now owns all IP related to Kingdoms of Amalur. Including an MMORPG set in the universe that was cancelled in 2013 after 38 Studios ran into financial trouble.
Here's the 2012 launch trailer for Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, in case you're wondering what Amalur is all about.
Now, acquiring IP is one thing - creating a new game is another. As to what THQ Nordic plan to do with the Amalur name remains to be seen. And hey, bringing back cult classics and forgotten gems seems to be working well for the publisher.
