Ready At Dawn Studios' CEO and Creative Director Ru Weerasuriya has offered up some new information on the background setting of their upcoming next-gen PlayStation 4 title The Order: 1886.

Revealed at E3 during Sony's press conference, 1886 will take place in a "Neo-Victorian London" where it will seem familiar to players but as you progress through the game the advancements in technology will become more apparent. One of the major examples that Weerasuriya talked about in the PlayStation Blog entry was the "advent of electricity throughout the city, well before its time. Gas lamps are replaced by electric street lights. Everywhere you go, you can hear the hum of electricity running through the city."

Weerasuriya continues with the London description, revealing that players will find a number of familiar structures including the iconic subway system, though much more advanced than it is in real life. "Sections of the subway system run above ground compared to the modern underground structure, and signs line the streets making some areas of London almost look like Times Square," says Weerasuriya.
The other big change you will witness is in the skyline of London. Although the familiar sights of Big Ben, St. Paul’s, and the Tower Bridge are present, the skyline is broken up by watch towers. Their searchlights are constantly scanning the city and the skies. The other change in the skyline is the presence of airship mooring towers. In The Order: 1886, London is patrolled day and night by a squadron of dirigibles called the Sentinels. All of these are a constant reminder that the world is not as it seems.

These changes are the result of our Industrial Revolution, mankind’s chance to take the upper hand in a centuries-old war. Mankind now has access to advanced weapons, one of which you saw in the trailer — a rifle that can fire electricity.
The bog post also drives home the almost futuristic aspect of this Neo-London setting, revealing information on some of the weapons available in the game. An example is the Thermite weapon, which allows you to allows you to shoot a cloud of inflammable thermite that can be ignited by a flame or by shooting a flare into it.

Of course for those who may not be comfortable with the advanced weaponry will have the opportunity to wield traditional black powder guns for the nice smokey effect. This adoption of both will, according to the blog, "give a sense of realism and believability to the world and make the atmosphere feel dirty and palpable, reminiscent of the way we’re used to viewing the real, post-Industrial Revolution Europe."

The Order: 1886 has yet to be given a set release date, but is expected sometime in 2014 exclusively for the PlayStation 4. For a reminder on what to expect from Ready At Dawn you can check out the E3 reveal trailer below.

Every time I see something about this game all I can think is Hellgate: London.
