Set for release on January 28, though it was refused classification here in Australia last year, Bloober Team's The Medium is a "one of its kind horror game" in that you control the protagonist in the real-world and the spirit world at the same time. Using fixed camera angles and a clever split-screen presentation this look at a chunk of gameplay definitely makes this an early 2021 release to look out for.
Very cinematic and old-school horror in its approach The Medium looks to be focusing more on exploration and discovery rather than action. The split-screen stuff is great too and grounds stuff happening in the 'spirit realm' by giving you the same scene but in the real-world. It also cuts between the two, meaning the horror here will be very cinematic.
Check it out.
Discover a dark mystery only a medium can solve. Explore the real world and the spirit world at the same time. Use your psychic abilities to solve puzzles spanning both worlds, uncover deeply disturbing secrets, and survive encounters with The Maw - a monster born from an unspeakable tragedy.
There's some classic SNES Zelda vibes here too where a broken staircase in the real-world is in-tact in the spirit realm, opening up a traversal puzzle in the sense of trying to get to a higher floor. Grounding the spirit realm action in the real world is a great touch though we also see an 'out of body' sequence where the real-world scene is shrouded in darkness. Creepy, and very cool.
The Medium is out later this month for Xbox Series X and S and PC on January 28. We've noticed that its currently listed for pre-installation via Xbox Game Pass locally so odds are the classification stuff has been sorted.
