Created by the small and passionate group Modern Storyteller, based right here in Australia. Available now on PC and Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, The Forgotten City sees one of the most impressive Skyrim mods become an Unreal Engine powered standalone release. A story-driven tale set in an ancient Roman city that has you repeating a time loop to try and change the course of history.
Trapped in a secret underground city during the Roman Empire, twenty-three lost souls cling to life. In this precarious utopia, if one person breaks the mysterious Golden Rule, everyone dies. Players must relive the city's final moments in an endless loop, changing the course of the day with each secret they uncover. Combat is an option, but violence will only get them so far. Only by cleverly exploiting the time loop and making difficult moral choices can they hope to unravel this murderous riddle.
Over at Xbox Wire, Nick Pearce, Managing Director at Modern Storyteller gives a fascinating look at the game's creation. The original mod, which was downloaded over 3 million times received critical acclaim which led to Nick doing the seemingly impossible. Quitting his day job, building a small team, getting financing and grants, and fleshing out the experience for what we see above.
Development took four years all-up, and it's pretty amazing that this was created by three people. We'll be digging into this one in the coming days, so be sure to check back soon for our full review.
