Heroes of Newerth, and Savage developer S2 Games has announced Strife, a new free-to-play Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) style game that is reportedly being designed to be more accessible and inclusive than other games in the genre, and hopes to foster a friendlier community as a result:
Unlike other MOBAs, Strife is built entirely around the idea of a collective, contributing community. Predicated on creating a more connected multiplayer experience that incentivizes cooperation, Strife streamlines communication between players with innovative, in-client social systems and rewards players for team collaboration, not simply placing highest on a leaderboard. It also employs design elements that instruct and inform, providing immediate feedback for genre newcomers and veterans alike.
Strife aims to make strides in MOBA storytelling, delivering an engrossing world with a layered backstory to further connect players with the heroes they choose. It all begins when the invasion of the Dharkwave, harbingers of darkness foretold by prophecy, is imminent, promising catastrophe upon the world. Its only hope is an Army of Light, forged in the crucible of battle to hold the line against their impending arrival. Players must overcome “The Trials of Strife,” as well as one another, to prove themselves as champions worthy to face the Dharkwave.
Instilling in players personal attachments to their heroes as much informs S2’s approach to art and character design as it does lore, producing units that are not only fun and intuitive to control, but that each feature their own definitive style. Everything from the pets they fight with to the crafted weapons and items they bring to battle is informed by the look, feel and personality of each hero. These customizable character choices encourage players to experiment, adapting tactics appropriate to personal play style.
Closed beta registration is on offer over on the game's official website, and you can scope out the announcement trailer and screenshots below.
Strife is expected to launch this Summer (Northern Winter) on PC
Since its inception, HoN has taken reign as the challenging, hardcore MOBA. That said, HoN players that elect to partake in Strife will notice a few differences, chiefly the barrier to entry. Strife is designed to be a more approachable MOBA, one that has removed some of the intricacies that often deter first-time MOBA players. HoN and Strife will co-exist to provide players with a comprehensive MOBA experience of their choice.
if u like stacking, tread swapping, pulling and denying, then stay away from strife. it will be a prettier version of LoL with all the same derpiness haha
Man they all look like arse beside dota2. Watched a video of LoL yesterday... would not have sex with those pixels
I'm completely bias towards favouring Dota2, but I did give LoL a shot. It's art direction is garbage and the whole idea of having a game that's supposed to be competitive requiring you to purchase heroes is stupid. Even if you don't intend them to be, these type of games end up being competitive. It's just the core principle behind him. The art style and graphics in lol mean team fights become a complete and utter cluster f*** of not knowing what's going on.
I dunno how this game will stack up to the likes of already established franchises like lol/dota but I think Dota is only going to start dominating the arts/moba genre.

Dunno the chances of a new MOBA succeeding.
Also, lets wait for the 'its called an ARTS not MOBA' comment.
