Which, yeah, is definitely a weird headline. This year
E3 Colisuem hosted a panel with both
Elon Musk of
Tesla and
SpaceX fame and
Todd Howard of
Bethesda Game Studios, with a conversation that gave us a few key details about the still very mysterious
Starfield - the sci-fi RPG from the team behind
Skyrim.
Not exactly specific gameplay stuff but some info on the sort of serious tone that
Starfield is going for. Namely that space travel in the world, or galaxy, is very dangerous - and something akin to early 20th century pioneers in flight.
"Traveling in space in our game, I want to say it's like flight in the '40s, it's dangerous," said Howard. "It's still dangerous to go and explore, even though lots of people do it." Apparently Howard visited SpaceX headquarters in an effort to bring some real-world authenticity to the game. Starfield is still very much a Bethesda game, with Howard noting that space travel in Starfield won't be as punishing.
These details kind of point to Starfield being serious or "hard sci-fi", which sounds fascinating. As we haven't seen in-game footage or any art, there's a good chance this will be a launch window release for next-gen hardware in late 2020. Well, we're hoping it will be. Re-watching the
teaser trailer from last year, you can begin to see the serious direction.
