Outside of bug-fixing and maintaining the servers that is. Released last-week,
Star Wars: Squadrons from
EA and
Motive Studios saw the triumphant return of classic Star Wars space battles ala the Rogue Squadron series form the N64-era and CD-ROM era's TIE Fighter. It's also something of a
VR killer app. And a standalone release in the traditional sense.
As per a new interview
with Upload VR, Creative Director on Star Wars: Squadrons, Ian Frazier, notes that there currently aren't any plans in place to release post-launch content in the form of DLC or new purchasable bits of Star Wars goodness.
“Never say never, so to speak, but as far as our philosophy goes we’re not trying to treat the game as a live service,” said Ian Frazier. “We don’t want to say, ‘It’s almost done!’ and then dribble out more of it over time, which to be honest is how most games work these days. So we’ve tried to treat it in kind of an old-school approach saying, ‘You’ve paid the $40, this is the game and it’s entirely self-contained. We’re not planning to add more content, this is the game, and we hope you understand the value proposition.'”
Locally available at under $50 AUD, Star Wars: Squadrons represents great value - an often thrilling cinematic single-player campaign and great multiplayer to boot. Again, in VR (on PC and PS4) it's amazing. Here's hoping the game sells well enough that we get a sequel, or a stand-alone expansion ala the classic old-school approach. Which is more in line with the release than charging say, $5 to fly a B-Wing.
