It's that time of year again: shooter time. Specifically, first-person shooters (with the exception of the likes of Gears of War 4, of course). And today we have our in-depth review of Respawn's Titanfall 2, which now comes packaged with a complete single-player campaign and also finds itself releasing on PS4 alongside Xbox One and the platform we reviewed it on -- PC.

Check out a snippet from Joaby's review:
They weren't shipping with a singleplayer campaign, for example. They were including a card system in the place of Perks (a rewards system they'd essentially invented in the first place). Titans had the potential to be huge balance issues. Pilots could wallrun and double jump and power slide, so the game was much, much faster than most other games on the market. There was a big chance that people wouldn't want to play this--and looking at the way the game dropped off after its launch, that might have been the case.

But the impact it had is obvious. At the time that Titanfall released, the Call of Duty series had just launched Ghosts, which (on top of its many other problems) was probably the slowest Call of Duty since 3. Post-Titanfall Call of Duty games, on the other hand, feature Wall-running, Double Jumping and Power Sliding as if the CoD teams still took their cues from Vince Zampella and Jason West. Once again, the team who changed the landscape of shooters with COD4 did so again--this time, with mobility.

It's clear Respawn Entertainment is capable of making massive, game-changing risks. So why does Titanfall 2 play it so safe?

I really do admire you, Joab. Well except for your Total War gameplay. I would follow you to any shooter, and get slaughtered by your vastly superior gameplay. I always read your reviews first and I search for them.
But having played a huge amount of Titanfall on PC, I, for just this once, beg to differ.
Titanfall was vastly more accessible for poor players.
There is a huge steep learning curve to play CoD games, for example. I'm hopeless. I just can't learn maps, guns, moves, upgrades. I suck. My aiming is weak and never fast enough. I do try to keep playing but I soon realize I am just a burden to the team. I never get much value for my money. Same for Battlefield and others.
But I had huge fun in Titanfall. There was less to learn and less need to get it perfect. Just hop in and you are quickly blowing stuff up. You might not be perfect but you feel you are contributing. When you occasionally have a good game, you feel great. Hundreds of hours later you hang up your guns when the Singapore servers finally empty. Alright, the hacks were annoying, but overall - great! And yes, we only played Domination, and TDM at the end.
Titanfall is supremely fun for peeps who cannot handle CoD. So was the first PvZ Garden War btw. I hope we can keep crowded Titanfaall 2 servers for a long time. The smaller learning mountain and much more accessible and desirable gameplay should see to that. I will likely only play Domination and some TDM.
I have bought CoD Infinite also. I look forward to the campaign and I hope I can cope with zombies. I probably won't ever risk entering my clan's private game servers. But I know after only a score of pub server games, my embarrassment will soon see me returning to Titanfall 2 to soothe my damaged ego.
I will play Titanfall 2 to distraction, and perfect my Torbjorn and Ana for a change of pace.
Maybe great players like yourself will occasionally take a break from grinding the last weapon unlock on CoD or BF1 and pop in to Titanfall 2 to give a few of us a real blast.
I hope to see you there.

"Once again, the team who changed the landscape of shooters with COD4 did so again--this time, with mobility."

Is it really changing the game or just going back to the roots of the genre?

Mobility has always been a massive thing in oldschool shooters, it's just that consoles couldn't keep up.

Hopefully with more PC gamers, we'll see a bigger return to mobility and high skill (Overwatch and such have been making a good start)

Flattery hey!? That works! I didn't mean to imply that I don't think Titanfall 2 has value, because it does. But I think that by playing it safe it risks bleeding population the way the first game did, and I think that would be a real shame for a franchise that I believe holds a great deal of potential. I mean it's speedier Mechwarrior, right? I'd love for Titanfall 2 to get huge numbers and capture imaginations and spawn a yearly franchise, the off years made by a studio with as much ambition as Treyarch.

I don't think a high skill ceiling is essential to quality in a game, but I think it leads to a longer tail as players attempt to reach their peak. So I guess looking at it through that lens can create a blindspot where I dismiss the value of a game which is directly related to its slightly lower skill ceiling. I actually don't even know if it does have a lower skill ceiling necessarily. The maps are designed so well that traversal is even better than it was in Tf1, so there is a possibility that some parkour masters will be able to utterly smash at Tf2.

Is it really changing the game or just going back to the roots of the genre?

Yeah, other critics were wrong. It has 13,000 current players on Steam alone, that's not including players on Uplay either. It's got more players than the next most populated COD.

If you haven't played it, you should. It's actually even better than it was at launch, with a better UI, many of the bugs squashed, more Operators and maps and better matchmaking.
