After being pushed back to later this year, Square Enix's open-world action-RPG Forspoken (PlayStation 5, PC) is now on track for a January 24, 2023 release. Based on gameplay footage we got back in March this is shaping up to be something of a visual spectacle, and an RPG that transports Frey, a young New Yorker, into a world fantastical creatures.
As for the delay, Square Enix notes that development has been completed and that the team is currently in the polishing phase.
Here's the statement.
As a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, we have made the strategic decision to move the launch date of Forspoken to January 24, 2023. All game elements are now complete, and development is in its final polishing phase. We would like to thank you for your continued support and patience on this journey. Your excitement for the game inspires us every day and we cannot wait to share more about Forspoken with you later this Summer!
Naturally, with God of War Ragnarok dated for November 9 many are wondering if the delay is to put a bit of space between the two as Forspoken's lead platform is the PlayStation 5.
And if you need a reminder as to what Forspoken is all about, here's that trailer from a few months back.
Lead Frey on an unforgettable journey in her search for a way home after being mysteriously transported to a breathtaking, fantastical land. Unravel the mysteries of Athia as Frey travels through the calamitous Break and discovers how to wield an immense power.
Explore the sprawling realms of Athia, a striking land of remarkable vistas and otherworldly creatures brought to life through stunning graphics and cutting-edge technology. Venture deep into corrupted territories where a mysterious darkness defiles everything it touches.
As per the announcement we'll be getting a new look at the game soon. So stay tuned for that.
