Late February gamers around the world woke to the news that Square Enix had quietly released a remastered version of the classic 16-bit era RPG Chrono Trigger. But, the excitement was short lived as the port was exposed as little more than a mobile version with distracting image processing and a terrible UI. The feedback was heardm with Square Enix now taking steps to improve the release.
The first of a few patches has recently made its way to
Steam which restores the look and feel of the original release.
Original Graphics: A new option will allow players to choose between the current high-resolution character sprites and background graphics, or a new ‘Original’ mode which is more in-line with the original style of CHRONO TRIGGER.
Updated Font and Dialogue Boxes: Fonts and dialogue window graphics are updated to give the game a more classic look and feel.
New Start-Up: The order of the animated opening sequences when starting a new game are reworked to be more in line with previous versions of the game.
With an additional patch still to come that will address the UI, offer increased resolution, and proper controller and mouse and keyboard support. Basically, the stuff people expected to find the first time around. In any event it's great to see that Square Enix care about the Chrono Trigger legacy and are actively working to improve this version of the classic RPG.
