Another one of the few stand-out singleplayer franchises of recent years is venturing into the multiplayer world, with Warner Bros Interactive Entertainment having announced a competitive mode for the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins.
3 vs. 3 vs. 2. An epic online showdown where every match is different. Think you can take down criminals on your own? Show them what you've got as Batman or Robin.
Want to rule the Gotham gangland and take out the Boy Wonder or Dark Knight along the way? Defend your turf and fight as elite members of The Joker or Bane gang. Don't worry, when things get dire for your gang squad, players can call in the ultimate reinforcement by summoning - and playing as -The Joker or Bane.
While the solo campaign is in production at Warner Bros Games Montreal, the multiplayer component is reportedly being handled by Splash Damage, the UK studio behind Enemy Territory, and Brink.
Interestingly, multiplayer has only been announced for PC, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3, with Eurogamer having discovered that the Wii U version of the game will be missing out:
Batman: Arkham Origins publisher Warner Bros. has explained its decision not to include a multiplayer mode in the game's Wii U version as it had decided to focus its efforts on the platforms with a sizable multiplayer audience.
"MP will be available for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC," a Warner Bros. spokesperson told Eurogamer. "The team is focusing development efforts on platforms with the largest MP audience."
Poor Wii U can't catch a break.
Check out the multiplayer trailer below. Arkham Origins is due on PC, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U on October 25th 2013.
*Sighs* Pretty much what Khel said. Can't help feel like this is more the publisher's doing to get that MP box ticked. Unless this MP surprises me like ME3's co-op MP did, but from the looks of this trailer, I doubt it.
If they wanted to tick a marketing checklist, just add a co-op mode where someone else plays as Robin and have specific co-op maps designed with AI enemies. This just looks worrying. I will, however, try to remain optimistic that something unique may stem from it.
