With The Independent speaking to Sony chief executive Kenichiro Yoshida at the recent IFA technology show in Berlin, who stated that the PlayStation 4 is currently the best console available right now. Which means cross-play for a game like Fortnite shouldn't be an issue, because, you know PS4 is the best.

"On cross-platform, our way of thinking is always that PlayStation is the best place to play. Fortnite, I believe, partnered with PlayStation 4 is the best experience for users, that's our belief," Yoshida said. Adding that competition is good for the industry, particularly with Nintendo and Microsoft.

"We already opened some games as cross-platform with PC and some others," Yoshida continued. "So we decide based on what is the best user experience. That is our way of thinking for cross-platform."

Well, it's more of a non-answer than anything - and reaffirms Sony's stance that cross-play with both the Switch and Xbox One won't be happening anytime soon as they're the competition. Whereas PC and mobile are not. For the 100+ million Fortnite players though this fragmenting of the community is still a cause for concern. Oh, and Fortnite plays great no matter the platform.
