Yeah, the idea of walking into a retail store and seeing a bunch of consoles sitting on a shelf is starting to sound like fantasy. With ongoing component shortages affecting all hardware makers, Sony is still forecasting that it plans to sell 18 million PlayStation 5 consoles globally over the next year. With Sony's chief financial officer Hiroki Totoki stating this is "still short somewhat" of meeting the demand.

The comments arrived as part of the Q&A portion of a recent financial earnings call and report, where we learned that 11.5 million PS5 consoles shipped during FY2021. Which makes the bump to 18 million a sizable one, but still beholden to global supply chain issues. Stuff that is also affecting sales and production for Microsoft and Nintendo too.

"18 million units is what we feel very comfortable that we can get the parts and components [for]," Hiroki Totoki said. Adding that the current pandemic situation in China presents a risk of affecting the forecast if the situation were to worsen.
