The devastating earthquake that struck the north of Japan last month will likely push the release of Sony's next handheld, NGP, back to a vague "2012" release window, according to CEO Jack Tretton, speaking with Bloomberg.

"It may be the straw that says 'maybe we get to just one market by the end of the year'," Tretton said, likely referring to Japan as the "one market" they'll get to. While it's not really alarming that something like this could happen as a result of the earthquakes, it does put Sony's machine months behind Nintendo's recently released 3DS which could lead to a massive loss of potential market share; leaving Sony's new handheld in more of a position to mirror the PSPs performance against Nintendo DS.

well it was successful in that it stayed out at market for a while, but comparatively, in the handheld market, DS and even DSi smashed it

Yeah, but they were aimed at differen't markets. It's like saying all toys are the same. you're not going to give a barbie to a boy (well unless your intentions are strange).

It was successful in the sense that it made a lot of money, but it sure didn't have the same profit margin, and returns on investments that the dsi have. But that's really only an investor point of view. To the gamer who liked the PSP, the PSP was, and still is, an excellent machine. Just wish my PSP1000 was a bit smaller.. haha.

Personally I never saw the point of the PSP, like the DS and now the 3DS offered me features and games and experiences I can't get on a home console, but I never got the point of shrinking a PS2 or a PS3 and making it portable. If I wanted to play those games I'd just play them on a PS2 or PS3?
