Beating the pace of both the
Wii and the
PS2 by a few months to set the record for shipping 100 million consoles to retailers. Which is the figure being measured here, not sold to customers. Either way it paints and then frames and cements a picture of the
PlayStation 4 as this generation's clear winner.
What's even more impressive is that over the last quarter, ending June 30 2019, PlayStation 4 hardware sales and PlayStation Plus subscriptions all increased over the same period last year. Total revenue was down, and according to reports it's being attributed to fewer major third-party and first-party releases during the same period as last year. Because, hey, it's not every year you get a stone cold classic and hit like
God of War.
Interestingly Sony notes that digital sales for games were up this year too, hitting the highest percentage yet for digital game sales for a quarter (at over 50%). Of course, without Microsoft offering up exact figures for Xbox One sales or shipments there's no direct comparison to the PlayStation 4's closest rival - but recent news on that front did reveal that Xbox One revenue has been decreasing as this generation winds up.
