Sony Announces the More Powerful PlayStation 4 Pro

As expected, earlier today Sony announced the PlayStation 4 Pro. A more powerful PlayStation 4 that offers up double the GPU power, a faster CPU, and a 1TB hard-drive as standard. The unit is also not that far away with a launch date of November 10 and a price tag of $559.95. Click through for more details, and specs.

Following on from the announcement Sony revealed the PlayStation 4 specs which you can peruse below.

The new 4.2 TFLOP GPU has been adapted from AMD Polaris graphical architecture. Sony went on to showcase a number of games running on a 4K display including Spider-Man, For Honor, and Deus Ex: Mankind Divided. The console will also support HDR, alongside the new PS4 Slim and existing PS4 model. Also, existing titles like Uncharted 4 will also benefit from higher resolutions. The improvements that come with the PS4 Pro aren't limited to 4K displays as those with 1080P TVs will also benefit from improved visuals. Sony mentioned that a number of developers are already working on patches to take advantage of the hardware. EA has already confirmed that its upcoming games, like Fifa 17, Battlefield 1, and Mass Effect: Andromeda will all take advantage of the extra GPU and CPU power of the unit.

The only thing that seems to be missing is a lack of a 4K Blu-ray drive. But 4K streaming for services like Netflix will be available.

except probably for Aus because our internet is too s*** to handle regular netflix let alone 4k.

I don't keep up with consoles at all but I feel like every time I look around these days there's a new hardware version of an existing console. Is it kind of getting to the point where they have different hardware specs and you need to check to make sure your game supports the right version of the particular console? Or is it not that crazy?

This is a ridiculous decision to omit a 4k Ultra blu ray player... esp for us Australians where 4K streaming is a pipe dream for most of us given the NBN debacles I keep reading about

Yeah the drive omission is really the only big shock to come out of this, after all the specs were leaked.

Speak for yourself. My 100/40 FTTP NBN connection can handle a 25Mbps stream (Netflix 4K) just fine. You know, if I could be bothered paying extra for it. Or had a TV capable of it of which I have no interest in buying.

It's not that crazy. PS4 Pro and Scorpio both have mandates (at least in the beginning) that state all games must be compatible with both systems.

Right, so if you have the better hardware version I guess they just scale up the graphics a bit or framerate or whatever so you get a better experience, but they still work (in theory) fine on the older gear...?
