Sony has once again shown the gaming world that the thirst for new-gen consoles is definitely real, with
the announcement that their PlayStation 4 console has surpassed 18.5 million sales worldwide in just over a year of its lifespan.
The details come directly from Sony's Japanese
press release, which revealed that the 18.5 million sales is sold-through, meaning to customers and not to stores. Among the incredibly high-rate of console sales the press release also noted that PlayStation Plus accounts for 10.9 million users, as of January 2, 2015.
According to
Twitter user Erren Van Duine (via
NeoGAF), the holiday season alone saw a sell-through rate of 4.1 million consoles worldwide, an incredible feat for the Japanese tech giant. Software sales were also reported at 81.8 million, with an attach rate of 4.42.
