For the first time in many years, well ever really - Sony is planning to skip E3 2019. In a statement made to
Game Informer, Sony notes "As the industry evolves, Sony Interactive Entertainment continues to look for inventive opportunities to engage the community." Pushed for additional info Sony also said that it would not hold its own press conference around E3 - like EA has done in recent years with EA Play.
This comes as a surprise to fans as in recent years Sony's E3 pre-show and presence has won over many fans with stage debuts for titles like Horizon: Zero Dawn, Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part II, and many more cinematic exclusives. The big pre-E3 showcases from Sony and Microsoft usually generate the most feedback from the audience both in attendance and online - so it will be interesting to see if Microsoft follows suit.
Which, we wouldn't want to see as Microsoft has in recent years has tailored its E3 presentations around announcements that feel community-driven. Sony also shelved plans for its annual PSX event this year citing that it didn't feel that it had enough to show. This news of a no E3 2019 presence is definitely interesting, and could be linked to just when and where Sony wants to announce the PlayStation 5.
