Rebellion, developers of the slow-cam sniper series Sniper Elite, has today announced Sniper Elite: Nazi Zombie Army 2 for PC later this year, and potentially next-gen consoles.
Released earlier this year as a spin-off to the Sniper Elite V2 title, Nazi Zombie Army 2 will see main protagonist American OSS secret agent Karl Fairburne return to the zombie-filled battlefield. Like the original, the sequel will allow up to four players to fight alongside each other as they return to Berlin to fight against occult powers that sees the undead come back to life.
Head of Creative, Tim Jones explains that the team "really wanted to heighten the demonic, nightmarish tones of the first game."
"The environments, the levels, the soundtrack all give a strong feeling of descent - each encounter, each level becoming progressively more hellish. Most importantly though, we've expanded the legions of Nazi undead with some really intimidating new enemies which we'll reveal soon."
Currently the game is only confirmed for PC, though UK-based independent developer Rebellion is hoping to utilise the more friendly indie approach that both Microsoft and Sony are offering to see an eventual release on the next-gen consoles.
"We have to admit, we underestimated the demand for the original game," said CEO and founder of Rebellion Jason Kingsley. "All of sudden we had console gamers desperate for us to port the game to 360 and PS3, but without a publisher this just wasn't feasible. We left a lot of Sniper Elite fans disappointed. They didn't want to hear excuses from us, they just wanted to play it".
Kingsley also revealed that the fan response to the original release of Nazi Zombie Army was something that the team never expected. "It was amazing," Kingsley stated on the
official announcement. "At that point we hadn't announced Sniper Elite 3. A lot of Sniper Elite V2 fans had been asking for 4-player co-op content, and we thought it would be a good test of our gameplay mechanics. So we thought 'Why not?" and self-published it.”
