Confirming earlier reports, the newly founded Canadian studio Precursor Games has launched a crowdfunding campaign for Shadow of the Eternals, an action adventure title pegged as a spiritual successor to Eternal Darkness.
Developed by the creators of the critically acclaimed Eternal Darkness: Sanity’s Requiem, Shadow of the Eternals is an episodic action/adventure game that is likely to gain the attention of gamers everywhere.
Featuring an ensemble cast, Shadow of the Eternals will span over 2500 years of human history. Players will question their own perception of reality as progress through this mind-altering psychological horror.
The developer is handling the crowdfunding project themselves, and looking to raise US$1.5M, without the backer safety net of a third party such as Kickstarter. A decision that Precursor explains is due to Kickstarter requiring a US or UK presence --a stipulation that hasn't deterred many other Canadian entrepreneurs.
The project page is notably void of any mention of Silicon Knights, the former studio of the key Precursor Games members that developed the original Eternal Darkness, and more recently filed for bankruptcy protection following a series of poorly performing titles, and legal troubles.
That the team is asking for direct funding from fans, without first explaining the stability of their current legal and financial predicament, should invite caution from anyone considering pledging money toward this new game.
