Back in the early parts of the '90s there was no Sony or Microsoft when it came to home consoles. No big screen 4K displays with HDR lighting and RGB settings. All you had was a TV screen with a curvy thick glass screen and a aerial jack to connect your Mega Drive from Sega. Or, Super Nintendo if you chose that side during the first Console War.

Out today for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, Sega Mega Drive Classics offers offer 50 titles for the console, emulated and playable on modern hardware. And sure, it's not the first of these types of compilations but thanks to great emulation it's one of the better efforts.

Sega Mega Drive Classics is a retro compilation of over 50 titles from the lifespan of the Sega Mega Drive, that includes many familiar names like Sonic the Hedgehog, Golden Axe, Streets of Rage, Comix Zone, Shinobi, Gunstar Heroes, and more. All lovingly emulated in a virtual bedroom that offers a bookshelf library to browse titles to play, an old-school CRT display that can switch to full screen, and of course a Mega Drive to load-up each game on a virtual cartridge. It’s a fun presentation that sells the old school nature of the collection, and one that doesn’t skimp on options - thanks to emulation that lets you apply filters to not only improve the image but also add scanlines, so you can turn that big screen LCD into a television from the era.
