Right, so to a lot of people that headline might sound like gibberish but for those that have been following the tech that will drive both the PlayStation 5 and the Xbox Scarlett you'll no doubt be aware of the move away from traditional hard-drives to faster SSD (solid-state) solutions. And in a surprise revelation Samsung has revealed that it's working on an NVMe M.2 SSD for the "SSD era in game console".

As per the following slide from analyst Daniel Ahmad.

This points to Samsung partnering with Sony or Microsoft or both for the next-generation of console hardware. The NVMe clarification also confirms that the hard-drive and storage tech being implemented will be cutting edge - ala the recent Samsung 970 EVO Plus we reviewed.

Faster boot and game loading times will be more than welcome in the couch space, here's hoping though that either Sony or Microsoft somehow manage to offer at least 2TB for their next-gen hardware. One note that did catch our eye in the Samsung slide was the phrase "SSD required for proper game play" - meaning games may have to be installed on the faster storage in order to work.
