The most recent entries in the Saints Row series took character customisation to absurd levels of fun, giving you the ability to create any number of body types and then put on clothing and costumes that covered everything from sleek and cool to garish, over-the-top, and hilarious. With the Saints Row reboot on track for release this year, a new customisation trailer outlines what to expect.

And that is, seemingly everything and more.

The sheer number of options are insane, in the best possible way. From asymmetrical face customisation through to being able to run around in underwear with a layer of gloss covering your body through to having neon teeth and metallic socks. It's all covered in the video below, where you can also see a glimpse of characters that can look like Shrek or Marty McFly from Back to the Future (pink hoverboard included). Plus, we get to see glimpses of the over-the-top physics that let you glide through the air thanks to ejector seats you can install in cars.

Set in the fictional vibrant city of Santo Ileso, Saints Row is complete reboot of the series and combines all the action, crime and humor you’d expect from a Saints Row game. The extensive customization suite is Volition’s most powerful toolset to date and is best in class; you can modify almost anything in outlandish or aspirational fashion. How your Boss looks as you take over the city’s criminal underbelly is entirely up to you.

Volition has removed the boundaries of gender and restrictions for players – put anything on without limits and rules. Plus, there’s an incredible amount of vehicle options and weapon customization tools. Ultimately, in Saints Row, Player Choice comes first.

Boss Customization – Body, face, hair, clothes, everything you need to create whoever or whatever you want. Be your own Boss. Make them yours.

Vehicle Customization – Gearheads will love how in-depth you can go with vehicle customization, and it’s not just aesthetics – there's upgrades, signature abilities and even engine sound are all a part of the mix.

Weapon Customization – You can switch up the looks of your hardware too, change the color, pattern, decal, material or just make your favorite loadout look like something else entirely.

HQ & City – That run down church is yours to decorate as you see fit. As you get more powerful, your HQ sees its own glow up, but it’s up to you to add your own finishing touches to make it truly yours. As you grow into the criminal badass you were meant to be, the city changes too – by building your criminal ventures wherever you like, you’ll literally change that Santo Ileso skyline.

Saints & Friends – You can modify how your Saints recruits appear, as well as your friends with a variety of unlockable outfits.

As per above the customisation extends to vehicles, where we learn that the 80-plus vehicles can be customised with new parts and cosmetic upgrades to create some crazy rides. Plus, your recruits and even your home base. Impressive stuff, and if you were on the fence about this feeling like a true next-gen Saints Row, well, this will no doubt put to rest any concerns.

Saints Row is out August 23, 2022.
