Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Pillars of Eternity - just a few of the brilliant and very different styles of role-playing from development studio Obsidian Entertainment. As per a new report today by Kotaku, Microsoft is currently in the process of acquiring them in a deal that is said to be all but done.

Naturally, both Microsoft and Obsidian aren't commenting on the rumours but the playful nature of Obsidian's response, “Unfortunately, we don’t comment on rumours or speculation other than to say that the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac still holds up” is almost worth the speculation on its own.

With Microsoft recently expanding its portfolio of internal studios in order to bolster the future of Xbox and other services like Game Pass and its upcoming cloud-based streaming platform, and acquisition like this makes sense. Obsidian has long history of creating great games, especially when under pressure or financial strain to do so. With the developer's recent PC focus thanks to the success of Pillars of Eternity and Tyranny, this could also be an attempt to bolster its PC or Windows 10 line-up of software as opposed to something Xbox specific.

Either way, this is pretty big news if true.
