According to a
report over on MCV, citing "two senior games industry sources", Microsoft has worked a deal with Electronic Arts that will see UK Xbox One consoles come packed with a free copy of FIFA 14. The upcoming annual soccer instalment that would usually retail for £54.99, is said to be getting bundled in, to increase the value proposition of the £429.99 Xbox One console in Europe, versus Sony's planned £349 PlaySation 4.
FIFA is the biggest game in Europe - FIFA 13 sold 3m copies in the UK alone over the last year – so the deal would make sense. And is a potential coup for Microsoft.
It would also be a show of commitment to Europe after the platform holder disappointed consumers by announcing that some markets would have to wait until 2014 to buy Xbox One.
MCV suggests that Microsoft is planning to announce the bundle with EA at GamesCom 2013 event in Cologne, Germany, which kicks off tomorrow, and the rumour appears to be somewhat corroborated by fellow UK publication
CVG.
Belgium, Denmark, Finland, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland were recently scrubbed from the XBox One launch window, and pushed back into 2014, however the console is still due to launch in the UK, Austria, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, and Spain on schedule.
The Xbox One is also still on schedule to launch in Australia, New Zealand, Canada, Brazil, Mexico, and the United States in November, but whether this free game deal might extend to other launch regions is unclear; perhaps we'll be offered a different game.
