In a collaboration between Ron Gilbert's Terrible Toybox studio, Devolver Digital, and Lucasfilm Games, a brand-new Monkey Island adventure is on track for release sometime this year. Called Return to Monkey Island it has been in active (and secret!) development for the past two years.
The teaser trailer below sets the scene whilst confirming the return of Guybrush Threepwood (voiced by Dominic Armato) and the iconic theme and music of Michael Land. Plus with LucasArts veteran Dave Grossman is also on board.
And just to add some more weight to the game, we've got confirmation that the story will take place after the events of Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, making it a Monkey Island 3a of sorts. The Secret of Monkey Island is a seminal release in the "point-and-click" adventure genre, where it first hit the MS DOS scene back in 1990 - written by Ron Gilbert, Dave Grossman, and Tim Schafer. The sequel followed shortly after in 1991, making this something of a miracle in terms of classic videogame sequels.
Very cool news indeed, and of course we'll be following this one closely.
