I was never amazing at Quake, not like most of the original Mammoth/AusGamers/QGLers. Or Joab. But I damn appreciated the depth the game was played to by the punters, and with the debut gameplay trailer just emerging from QuakeCon, I'm going to go out on a limb and say that it looks like it's definitely capturing the spirit of Quake 3 Arena.

id Software Studio Director Tim Willits took to the stage at QuakeCon 2016 to debut the first Quake Champions gameplay trailer. Packed with blazing-fast action and explosive rocket jumps you know and love, get first look at the game’s Champions – including new characters and franchise favorites.

In true Quake fashion, you’ll have an arsenal of powerful and unique weapons, each of which will feel familiar to long-time Quake players. There’s no loadouts, and no limit to the amount of guns you can carry. Quake Champions will be going into closed beta in 2017, so it won’t be too much longer before you’ll be able to get your hands on the heart-thumping arena-style FPS and see for yourself just how fast it is, running at 120hz with unlocked frame-rates.
We'll have much more on this badboy when our on-the-ground reporter files his content shortly, so stay tuned.

I could watch Quake as eSport for days over so many other games. It's about the only game I'm happy to spectate

That's what I thought at first, but on closer inspection it looks like a new map inspired by q3dm6. Boy does it look good!

I dunno why they bother with all those high-res high detail textures, we're just going to go looking for a picmip-6 like setting :P

Quake Champions Is Not A Hero Shooter

I know, it sure seems like one, but it isn't. While there are separate characters, and each of them does have one unique ability at their disposal, they're just minor wrinkles in otherwise near-identical shells. Willits used the word "additive" to describe the character abilities, stating clearly that matchups and team comps aren't what determine outcomes, player skill is.

Anarki - Sports a hoverboard, which appeared to make him faster than the other characters. This seems like it would make him the obvious choice in a game like Quake, so maybe there's some downside we don't know of yet.

this is a little worrying though. all characters should have the same movement speed.

They said the abilities are brief... so I doubt they would make one character always faster.

It's actually seeming pretty good. I'm more concerned with the air control.

I assumed that the air control in the video WAS an ability.

How long would it take new players to learn the movement if they can only use it temporarily? Seems more like a separate mode.

According to the latest from QuakeCon, it's not a separate mode, a player actually has the movement permanently (Anarki), along with half health and a healing ability.

Such a bad idea. Hoping that'll get scrapped immediately.

jesus christ there's a healing champion and one that has an area of denial attack.

this sucks. :(

Yeah, character choice should only be about who has the least annoying pain and jump sounds.

I'm looking forward to trying this out. I'm not 100% sold on the whole champions thing but I'll keep an open mind. It'll be cool if they bundle it with it's own version of snapmap.

i've lost a lot of interest now knowing it's a hero shooter-lite.

Hopefully if it's fully moddable it won't be long before there's a Quake 4.5

I'm betting its not moddable if they go Free to play, because they'll want to make money through selling skins and stuff like that
