At one stage, much like with many high profile game releases, there were whispers that a potential Gears of War movie was in the works. During a livestream event ahead of next week's Gears of War 4 launch, Microsoft dropped word that they were partnering with Universal Studios to bring Gears of War to the big screen. Assuming of course that the big screen can handle that much bicep.

Although they didn't divulge any real detail or timeline as to when we can expect a release, they did point to the series' lore as the main driver for the project. And that any potential movie might not occur during events portrayed in the games or feature the same characters.

The Coalition head Rod Fergusson stated that, "Some video game movies in the past have failed because they tried to make a movie for gamers," Continuing, "If you have this great IP with a deep backstory and lots of lore that you can make interesting stories out of it’s great, but if you just go after the gaming audience then it isn’t going to be a successful movie."

Some wise words indeed. But then again there hasn't been a single movie based on a videogame that you'd consider a critical success.
